DVD-ROM drive half-dead?

Delta OIP-DV1200 - it reads CDs, but seems to be incapable of recognising a DVD any more, checked with one I know I've used before (magazine coverDVD).

Don't know if software conflicts could scupper DVD reading but not CD (unlikely, I would think).
Tempted to throw a kill or cure cleaning disk at it, but that might just finish it off - I seem to recall hearing a worrying noise when I tried a protection scan with it.

So I guess I scrap it, and either replace it, or finally get round to fitting the DVD writer and use that instead ... I did have thoughts of trying to get the 1213S swapped for something else, but they'll get the firmware right in the end - and maybe the firmware hackers will do 1213S@1633S - the 1633S is apparently out in far eastern markets now.

Until now though, I've always followed the doctrine of "you only use the writer for writing", and you read in the reader - so I used the DVD-ROM for any reading that it didn't screw up on (a rather fussy drive, actually) - and that's the drive that is now dead, damaged or dirty.

I guess instead of replacing the CD writer with the DVD-Writer, I could let that take the wear and tear of general CD use, and confine the DVD writer to DVD use - read and write.

Alternatively, I suppose, sling a new DVD-ROM in - if something does foul up while reading, I'd rather wreck a 15 quid DVD-ROM than a 60 quid writer!

**EDIT**

I'd go with the cheapy DVD-ROM replacement. I've normally got one spare from old PC's I get when upgrading :)

my Litey 163S has put some hours in :D

One power outage when my LTD-163 was busy ripping was enough to kill it forever (and COMPLETELY, it would fail to read anything after the disaster)- so I guess nothing crazy happened here.
