DVD-R playback problems

Hey all,

I'm in need of some help, my mate has a DVD-R (A05)writer and has sent me over a disc (the red datawrite 4x) and it plays fine on my PS2 for the first 20mins or so and then starts to stop and start and get jumpy untill it just stops and the PS2 says it can't read the disc.

I try it on my PC's DVDrom drive and it crashs PowerDVD and I have to eject the disc to get my PC back.

The thing is I sent him the disc back and he said it worked fine on his PC and PS2 so why isn't working for me???

Any ideas as to what could be happening????

Well seeing you both agree thats its the media my mates using can you suggest media that would work??

thanx

Ritek, Princo, Verbatim, and TDK are good brands. Just when you burn the backup burn it at the lowest speed. :)

After having good results with a two 25-spindles of 4XH white-top Princos (on a Sony DRU-500a), I made the mistake to buy another two.
This badge is just horrible, the burn finishes but the verification fails every single time... No problems with Ritek and Sony media.
The lesson is that I will never, ever again buy Princos.
Verbatims are also very poor- actually Verbatim does not make them at all, they just stamp the crappiest/cheapest media they can find around.

Im completely disagree with scarecrow. Did it ever occur to you that it may be YOU instead of the discs! Ok I can tolerate it that princo may not be the favourite but it has worked flawlessly for me. But insulting verbs?!?!?! You're the first. Who told you that verbatim doesn't make them and just stamp the label. If Verbatim was so cheap as you state then why is it that 94% of people that make backups use Verbs? WHy are verbatims just as expensive as Ritek, or TDK?? hmmm..... maybe you can think about that for a while.

ps2king the verbs U get in the USA may NOT be the same as we get in europe (ive never used em) as for princo I have never been impressed with them BUT if they work for U fine. The Sony burner is very picky with media & definitely (as Scarecrow says) it prefers Sony media (expensive) or Ritek.

So, you think that CMC Magnetics which (at a 90% percentage) makes media for Verbatim are top Q, right? In that case you should try hard finding another one who shares this opinion... and by the way Memorex also stamps the very same media. You can also find those CMC's stamped by lesser "names" and sold at half the Verbatim price... I have heard about Verbatim media made by Mitsubishi, but I have never seen a single one of them here.
TDK's are another story- most I have found are made by Ricoh, and they are very good indeed.
@ poacher: 2X Sony media w/o jewelcase go for 1.15 euros here, and 4X ones for 1.65. Riteks G4 are 1.70, 4X Princos 1.40, and Verbatims (jewelcase included) 2,90 (!!!)
The above pricelist is enough for any sensible man to reject the last two of them straightaway...

Point made.

scarecrow You may be right, BUT in my opinion verbs have always worked for me. And at other forums I'm at everyone there too recommends verbs. It makes it easier for your ps2 to read the data. Im not saying Ritek doesn't because it does too. But the prices where you live will vary from where I live. Let's just keep it at that.
