DVD copying software sparks new legal battle

321 Studios is set to release a product that it claims will allow consumers to make perfect copies of their DVDs, but before the product hits the market, the start-up must first weather a legal storm brewing in its path.

The software maker plans to release on October 31 a product called DVD X Copy, which allows users to create "bit-for-bit" copies of their DVDs using a standard recordable DVD drive, says company president Robert Moore.

While the software promises to give consumers the same privileges they have for copying VHS movies, it is potentially against the law, according to industry experts. A U.S. legislation called the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act deems it illegal to distribute tools that circumvent copy prevention technologies used to protect DVD content. That is just what 321 Studios' software does.

They say it can be downloaded on the 28th of Oct, $79.95, $20 discount if pre-ordered. Demo, maybe.

arent most dvd video discs more than 4.7 gigs? most of the ones i've checkd are around 8 gigs. so then how would a 1 to 1 copy be done, without any compression?

Well how are they done at present? Ripped, stripped etc etc. This prog will(apparently) do all of that, without the need of half a dozen or more progs. Read Faqs ont their site.

nerogod

I echo these sentiments also , just how do you cram a dvd movie even when stripped to the basics ie.just the movie and one soundtrack onto a single dvd without compression as most , though not all , stripped dvd movies are at least 5 gigs.
Especially as they boast an EXACT copy meaning all menus all extras etc.

Their faq says they do all this without any compression which in turn leads me to think that this exact copy will be split over 2 discs

Alas all this is just conjecture as all will be revealed soon...........:)

yeah...we'll wait and see, but i still cant imagine how they're going to do it. as far as i can understand, i think dvd movie discs are double layered thus double capacity. a dvd-r\dvd+r are all single layer 4.7 gig discs.

so i would think that most copied movies with the DVDXCOPY software would have to be split amongst 2 dvd-r/dvd+r discs.....which I dont like. I think out of the 60 dvd movies I own, and out of the ones I checked the TOC size, only RONIN is under 5 gigs.
i'm excited to see the software come out......but suspicious also.

Their claims for this software are misleading. They should state up-front that most of all recent movies will require multiple disc's.
We all know that it's nearly impossible to do a bit for bit copy for most recent movies on 1 disc. People (who don't know better) are going to buy this and be very disappointed. I can copy movies that are less than 4.7gb now with 2 clicks using DVD Decryter! Menus and all.
This is almost a scam IMO!

Smartripper?

If this software was developed by their own in house prgramers why do they have smartripper on the their support site??
