why is it when i go to copy an orginal dvd with nero it tells me its copy protected is there a way around this so i can keep using nero 5.5.10

You have to rip the dvd copy protection out first with smart ripper or dvddcrypter etc before you can think about using nero.

trying to make backups of dvd movies

i'm completely new at this, thought i could buy a dvd rw and make backups of my dvd movies like a music cd. apparently not. where do i start, i was going to buy a sony dru500a, but too pricey for my blood. any help, direction would be apprecialted. thanks

The Tutorial section has a number of Tuts on how to do it, checkem out. Some DVD's are simple to backup, while others can be more difficult. You have a lot of reading ahead of you.
