DVD/CD-RW no longer recognised

Originally this drive worked. Now I continually get "selected drive not in use". However, when I go to "My Computer" & "Hardware" the device status says "device is working properly". When I check "Properties", the diagram shows the disc full even when there is no CD in the drive at all. What should I check?

:confused:

CD not recognised

Serjer,

Many thanks for your reply. The CD drive is "COMBI RW16x10 DVD"
The computer has Windows XP for an OS. It's an "HP Paviilion Home PC" with a Celeron chip. I've installed no burner software at all. I use (was using) the CD only for data and storage. Whaddya think?

:confused:

So what are you trying to do, using XP's native burning capability?
if so, check out XP's services, "IMAPI" must be activated there;
then right click at your drive in explorer > choose "Properties" > tab "Recording" > select "Enable CD recording ..." > Apply > OK

I'm just trying to have the computer recognise the CD drive. I was using it only for data storage and retrieval (from WORD). I checked the "Properties" > "Enable" > and it is set up to record. Thanks for your thoughts.

And what about the IMAPI service?
"Go to Control Panel > administrative tools > services shortcut. Scroll through the list to "IMAPI CD Burning" > double click this entry > choose start type "Manual" > Apply > OK."

Hi, to add to this discussion, I just started having trouble with my Pioneer dvd r drive and when I have gone to IMAPI it is nto started, I go through the proceedures of restarting it and when I reboot my computer, the IMAPI goes back to stop is it in my software or on why dvd-r?
I am using XP and a Pioneer dvd 104 and it won't record cd-r or dvd-r, but it plays cd-rom, cd-audio, dvd and disks that I had recorded earlier

Hi if you wish to use the XP builtin aid and you say its disabled go to you burner
My Computer right click your burner>Properties>Recordind and enabled CD RECORDIND BY checking the small box>Apply and ok
Or if you go to (Make sure you have Admin rights before hand)
Control Panel>Performance and Maintance>Administrative Tools>Serivces> Once here scroll down till you get to IMAPI CD Burning COM Serivce.Now click or double click onto. Now in the Startup or Startup types to the right of this is a drop down arrow,use this to select Manual or Automatic then APPLY and OK.
And reboot. Good luck.

Thank you rastabt
I have tried all of this before and it still will not work. and my IMAPI still will not stay started upon rebooting. I am trying to figure out if I may need to purchase a new DVD drive, get a lens alignment disk or there is something wrong with my system
Thanks
Jessie

If you can try your drive in another PC and take it from there.
If it works in the other PC you know its your system at fault.

I will try this, if it doesn't work though, could it be my dvd drive? and if it does work, does that mean that something is corrupt on my HD??? thanks again

then it's highly likely that the drive itself is the problem;

and if it does work, does that mean that something is corrupt on my HD???
not corrupt HDD; only a messed up Windows installation;
