DVD burning - plays on PC but not on Regular DVD player

I wonder if and of you guys can help. I am experiencing problems with burnt DVDs in that they burn perfectly well; they play on my PC but will not play on my regular DVD player by the TV.

In the past I have managed to burn a few DVDs so that they work on the regular DVD player as well but I just don’t know what has changed.

I have just upgraded to Nero 6 in the hope that it resolves the problem. It doesn’t appear to. Here’s a few details:

- My DVD burner is a Sony DVD RW DW-U10A
- The regular DVD player is less than a year old and is a Panasonic DVD-RV32.
- My system is comprises AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Processor, ASUS A7N8X nForce2 Deluxe Mainboard, 1024Mb (2 x 512MB) PC2700 DDR-Memory (333 MHZ), 200GB Ultra Fast (7200rpm) Hard Drive with 8MB Buffer, 128MB DDR ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 8X AGP TV out and DV, 17" LCD NEC 1760NX-D/A DVI 48x CD Re-Writer & 16x DVD-ROM Drive (Combo), SONY DVD Multi Burner (R/W all standard formats), Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 & Firewire (OEM).
- I run Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition operating system.

Are there any settings or format changes that I need to make when setting up to burn that will enable the DVDs I produce to be viewed on a regular DVD player? If so how do I make those changes?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Regards, Mark

Welcome. What media are you using and have you tried other media?
Also you can try a different program to rule out the media, I use CopyToCD & DVD. Let me know if that helps.

I'm using Nero 6 to burn regular VIDEO_TS spruce document, VOB and BUP files. These files appear similar in both the successful and unsuccessful DVDs I've burned.

(please not, I haven't got a clue what Spruce documents, VOB and BUP files are!)

Are you using +R or -R DVDr's and have you tried different media. Regarless of how you made your VOB files, the way you burn, the program used and the media type and brand has way more affect on weather or not plays on your DVD Player or not.

Have a read of the Tutorials in the Tutes section on how to use Nero, etc to burn DVD's and the setting to select.

Do your failed DVD-r(w)'s play to some extent or do they totally fail? I have seen players not reading correctly the first and/or last tracks burnt by a DVD burner.
Also have you tried DVD's burnt on a friend's or other computer?
Have a nice day.

I'm a happy chappy! Thanks for your help guys

You guys gave me the clues I needed. I was usung DVD+R and DVD+RW. The various DVD players I have tried here in the UK prefer DVD-R. And it worked. 100% success so far!

Is there any way of reformating DVD+R and DVD+RW into DVD-R and DVD-RW does anybody know?

@MarkG

I have used DVD+R and DVD+RW since my first dvd burner purchase over a year ago. I did run into media quality problems. But the biggest thing I've noticed is that dvd software players are not anywhere near as finicky as standalone dvd players when playing back dvd's you just burned.

for example, if in doing some stripping using IFOEdit I forgot to click on "get vts sectors", the software dvd player will play the dvd I just burned and give me the impression I have a valid burn. But the minute I throw it into the standalone, it whirrs and spits and shits. Sure as shootin' I open IFOEdit on the files I just burned and click on "get vts sectors" and discover they hadn't been adjusted.

I just get in the habit of using IFOEdit to run "get vts sectors" on my VIDEO_TS folder just before I burn.

Might not be your problem, but it certainly can cause the problem you mentioned.
