DVD Backup

First use SmartRipper 2.41 to copy the files from the DVD to your hard drive. During this process they will be decrypted if necessary. We'll need all the files so you'll just want to click "backup" on the left side. At the bottom select the target location where you'd like the files to go and then click Start and wait until it's done. If you don't see a start button you might want to check to make sure you have enough space on the target location. In fact SmartRipper already does this for you and you can find that information at the bottom left corner, along with the space required.

Second use DVD Shrink to prepare the files for burning. First click on "Open Files" and find the files you ripped to your hard drive. Then, if the DVD will fit on a blank disc, you can just click "Backup." It'll pop up some options and you can choose whether you'd like to save all the files to your Hard Drive, save the whole disk as one ISO file, or burn it directly to DVD.

The problem arises when one DVD will not fit on one blank disc. In this situation you have two choices...
Option A: IF your burner supports dual-layer burning, you can buy a Dual Layer disc (DVD+R DL) and it'll fit on there, and you're done.

Option B: Click on the re-author button before you hit backup. On the right you'll see all the different things on the DVD. You'll want the movie which should be the largest thing on there (both size and duration). Drag it to the left, and then you can make sure you have the correct thing with the little preview box at the bottom left. Feel free to look at the compression setting tab and if you want to remove any of the different audio tracks you may. You can also play with the compression settings if you'd like. Then click backup and you're back to selecting whether you'd like to save all the files to your Hard Drive, save the whole disk as one ISO file, or burn it directly to DVD.

I'd recommend that you play with this stuff on a DVD+RW (or DVD-RW if your burner doesn't support the + formats). That way if it doesn't come out as planned, you can just erase it and start over without wasting a disc. After you do it once you should be comfortable burning to DVD+R discs.

A final note: Don't pirate DVDs. They're worth the $20; and if they're not, then they're not worth pirating (or in some cases they're not even worth watching :p). If you're willing to drop a Jackson on a movie, then it's worth backing up so when your friends/kids scratch the disc (or step on it) you'll still have the movie. That's the purpose of this guide.

My mistake; I didn't realize that the turtorials are spread out into the different categories. I was looking in member tutorials http://www.dvdrbase.com/forumdisplay.php?f=201 for everything.

I guess there's just not enough room to have the DVD Conversion Tutorials link on the main page.

My apologies. Should my little post be moved over there then?
