Dvd 2 Vcd Tutorial - Final Output.

Hi guys! I have followed Chickenman's tutorials for both DVD 2 VCD and to SVCD and am extremely happy (especially with SVCD) with the outcome. I do however have one query which perhaps someone can resolve for me.

After I've burnt my VCD, in Darker scenes of the film I can see small squares grouped together in various areas of the picture flickering in alternate shades of black. Is this a result of the standard encoding process? Is there any way this can be corrected? I seem to remember someone saying that colours can be corrected in TMPGENC.

Finally, is there any way that you can convert a DVD 2 SVCD (using CM's tutorial with CCE) and get the finished MPG2 stream onto 2 discs instead of the standard 3?

Yes Dave, I did use the highest quality setting in TMPGENC... I followed CM's tutorial word for word. My SVCD came out perfectly however so I guess it could be either to do with the VCD bitrate of 1150 or my standalone DVD Player isn't too good.... only cost £100 but it plays just about anything....

Do you know anything about my other question... regarding getting an SVCD on 2 discs instead of 3? vcd_pat

Dark movies do tend to have that pixelation/blocking you are refering to, unfortunately a problem of VCD standards. In TMPGEnc, if you turn on Sofen Block Nose (in Settings) this can help a little, inceasing the default value of 35 to about 60 can eliminate most blocking but do not apply to a normal DVD riip, only dark ones. The Matrix is a dark movie and difficult to get an absolute perfect VCD.

I put most SVCD's into 2 CD's. The lengthy of the movie determines the number of CD's to use. If you look in DVD2SVCD and in the Bitrate tab, change all 740 to 800 and use 80min CDR's only. You will note the change from 2 to 3 CD's is for a movie over 125min long. Like there are not many movie over that lenght so most fit to 2 CD's. Trying to fit a 3 hr movie to 2 CD's as a SVCD will just lower the bitrate down that low, you might as well just make a VCD. If the Audio is not critical, lower it to 128 and pick up a bit more bitrate for the video. Hope that is all clear.

Cheers,

Cheers CM... I've just opened TMPGEnc but can't find the option you're referring to. When you say "in Settings" do you mean the SETTING button at the bottom right hand corner that has LOAD and SAVE buttons next to it? If so, under which tab can I find the Soften Block Noise option? Thanks for the info regarding DVD2SVCD rip onto 2 cd's, is the quality as good in your opinion, compared to using 3 discs? As for the Audio being critical or not, will the SVCD still fit on 2 CD's if I leave the bitrates at their default values? On your DVD2SVCD tutorial regarding the CDImage TAB, if I choose VCDXBuild in order to include a Change CD picture, do I have to tick any of the boxes like:
Use ChangeCD picture on all CD's
?? Thanks, vcd_pat

"When you say "in Settings" do you mean the SETTING button at the bottom right hand corner.." ...arrr yes! Then have a look in the Quantize Matrix tab.

A movie that DVD2SVCD would normally adjust to fit to 3 CD's is pretty crappy quality if you change it to fit to 2 CD's. But like I said, most fit to 2 anyway.

The "Use ChangeCD picture on all CD's" options as it indicates will put up the pic at the end of every disk including the last one. Normally it will only put it on end of disk 1 if its 2 disks long or disk 1&2 if 3 disks long.

Excuse me for being a bit dumb Chickenman... I looked through every tab on TMPGENC and couldn't find the Soften Block Noise option you mentioned under settings.. that's why I asked!! I think the reason I didn't see it was probably because it was grayed out/disabled... thanks for your witty response tho! Thanks also for further info on SVCD.... just out of curiosity, have you tried using DVD2SVCD with the TMPGENC option for converting DVD 2 VCD? If so, how well does it work? I guess u don't recommend it seeing as you don't have a tutorial using this program for VCD creation....I'm all for cutting down on wasting time sitting down and loading one program after the other! :D vcd_pat

We are all a bit "blonde" at times, me included. :D

Yes I have played with DVD2SVCD & TMPGenc for VCD's. A couple of problems in that the final VCD is not fully VCD compliant. You also dont have anywhere near the control you have over useing TMPGEnc by itself (well with DVD2AVI ). I must admit I have not checked the very latest verson but nothing in the change log suggests the probs have been fixed. It also seams to be slower as well. I will keep at it and will post if and when there are improvements over the current posted ways. Be assured of that.

Cheers,
