Is it likely/or even possible that dvd-9 or dual layered blank discs will become available in the future?

Technology being what it is maybe but as DVD9 I cant see how U can BURN to 2 layers on same side of disk!!

They have been working on it. There are competing professional units being developed that can do it. Don't even ask how expensive they will be when they do come out. 
You will have to get a whole new burner and the media will be pricey as well.
Worst, they are not always compatible with even the most recent players.

New Technology Blue Ray burners or similar will be out before Dual Layer DVD burners will be. We can dream but I thing single layer burners will be all thats around for a while yet.
