Dual CPU with Windows 2000

Has anyone got any views or warnings about dual CPUs and running Windows 2000.

Best M board, best CPUs, any conflicts with AGP slots? or anything else?

Anything to look out for in the way of trouble and where I may go wrong or any general advise and help I'd be grateful.

I have an idea that the pitfalls may be many and the real gain may not be worth the hassle but I'd value all opinions.

Thanks. :)

Need more info. AMD or Intel? Asus or Abit? I have server that uses 2 Athlon 2600+MP with a Tyan S2462UNG MB w/ latest BIOS, ATI AIW Radeon 8500DV, Adaptec Ultra 320 controller with 4 Seagate Cheetah 36GB 15K RPM Ultra-320 SCSI 68 Pin Hard Drive. Also have a Dual Xeon setup. Both work good enough. XP is also MP capable but 2000 is much much much faster. I think it's because of the fluff added to XP.

Dual CPU

I'm seeking all the info. I can before going into the dual CPU set up.
I need to know what are considered to be the best motherboards and the best processors that work OK with sort of set up.

I have heard that some graphic cards in the AGP slot conflict and cause problems with dual CPU but I have know knowledge of this apart from what I'm told.

If any of you good people out there could give me MB, CPU and Graphics Card selection that works well in their machine then I'll be able to form a better idea of what direction to go.

Thanks Nunyobiznes for your answer, I'm leaning more towards AMD as the CPU choice, just a matter of board choice to match and a graphics card to go with them.

Hey Lads, can you use Win 2000 Pro with dual procs or do you have to use Server? I cannot remember.

I'm completely out of money, so -- like always -- now's about the time that I start scheming to build another rig (utter foolishness, in other words, but it's a powerful compulsion).

AFAIK you need the server or advanced server edition of Windows2000 to have full support for more than 1 CPU.

Windows 2000 profesional works with as much as two CPU only thing is that you need to make sure when you buy it, it comes in two editions one supporting only 1 CPU and the other for 1 or 2 CPUs in the license of the product you can find this info

Dual CPU

Thanks to everyone so far.

It seems as though my Windows 2000 Pro is up to the job then!

Thank goodness, but I still need recomendations re Motherboards and
Graphic Cards.

Power Supply? would my 450w be OK or should I think about costing a new 550 in to the mix?

I've more or less decided on AMD for the CPUs as I can see trouble ahead if I go with the new hyperthreaded cpus from Intel.

(Would I then in theory have 4 CPUs)

More questions, I'm sorry but If I'm going to lash out a load of dosh on this "dream machine" then I want to be sure that I've got it right.

That mobo is great but it works with Xeon processors and if I understood well Geoff is trying not to spend a lot os cash, and Xeons are really expensive cpus

Hey Geoff, I don't know if you're still considering AMD procs for your server/ workstation, but if you are, the MSI K7D Master-L seems to be the enthusiast's choice, with goodies for o'clocking and other nice bits:

Tyan makes a fine 760 MPX mboard that's supposed to be marginally more stable (and serious for the conservatively-minded system administrator in you) but it's more expensive and doesn't have the same tweaks.

Post your experiences if you get one of these bad boys.

??

Or maybe I could go this route,

http://www.upgradeware.com/english/product/xptmc/xptmc.htm

and maybe save myself some money and end up with the same speed.

Could all you experts out there click the link and let me know your opinions please.

My present motherboard will only run to a 1000 CPU and I have an 800 Duron in it so it means a new board before I can even think about single
or dual CPU.

But 2003 is the year of the upgrade so I'm stashing wads of dosh away into the upgrade fund and I want to spend it wisely.

I personaly never liked this kind of adaptors, after installing one of this you might be able to run a bigger proc in your old mobo but it is physical imposible for the mobo to run the proc at full speed since it doesn´t have the proper components , so the adaptor creates a bottleneck wich downgrades the proc.

I AGREE. Waste of money.
