Dsl

Hi
i recently got yahoo sbc dsl, for a dsl service it's kinda slow.My download are only about 20kbs a sec, i tried using cablenut but im not sure how that works, does anyone have any tips so i can boost the speed.

also depends on time of day / where you are dowloading from how many downloads you have going how many uploads are taking place at the same time with a share client and also how many other people are using the same connection at your isp end ! im on a 50:1 ratio which means that there are upto 50 people on the same dsl connection at the isp end so some times it slows slightly but hardly noticable !

when you use a network OS like W2k or XP, there is nothing what you can do at your end; W2k and XP are native good configurated for broadband connections;

most ISP's have a test server with test download files, which are always available with full speed;

less rating/cascading of DSLAMs and Routers in front of the Broadband PoP showing the quality of your choosen ISP;

ANOTHER FACTOR HERE i have just read about is some people have problems with older motherboards not supplying sufficient power to the usb ports so to over come this a lot of isp's are starting to recommend a POWERED usb hub for better results instead of relying on the systems power provided to the ports in the system espesh in the case where there is additional things also connected to the same port/ports :)

Well actualy there are a few things you can do in xp/2k try these two links, they give some GREAT pre made registry settings.
as a "non expert" you can more lose, then you can win; :D

The1englishman and (of course) bluejrag0n38

i didn't mean a complete system loss;

i mean, if you don't know (or can't check out) the max. packet size of the ISP, you will get packet fragmenting with wrong MTU settings; in Germany different ISPs having different packet sizes, because they using different internal technique in front of the backbone and its ATM standard;

also you will get needless multiple transference in case of a not 100% conection quality and a to big chosen RWin;

packet fragmenting and multiple transference slows down your connection more then you can win if you change the standard settings of W2k/XP;

for sure we gave him the infos and links, so bluejrag0n38 can decide himself;

That is a very fair point, but since he already said his connection is sh it then i think a little playing around with the settings can only be benificial ;) and so long as before each registry edit a back up is made, then there will be no problems, because he can test for improvments after each reg edit session.

101% agreement :)

rarer the problem are the standard settings, often it is the download source; ;)

chickenhq's link is very good for a configuration test (pic below), but not the right thing for a speed test; when you live at the other end of the world, you can only check the "whole world internet average speed", but not your ADSL connection speed; :)
best way to check this out is a download from a test server of your ISP;

maybe bluejrag0n38 isn't longer interessted in our discussion, we didn't here a peep from him since he started this thread;
