?dru500ax prob wth ritek or recrdnowdx?

Last week I bought a Sony dru500ax and since then I've been consuming all information (and programs) on dvd burning. I'm now beginning to experience problems.

First off you need to know this:
-I have the Sony dru500ax -NOT- the dru500a (difference???)
-it comes with RecordNowDX -Not- RecordNow (difference???)
-its firmware version is 2.0c -not- 1.0c,d,f,g
(I checked firmware using DISCInfo120.....yes its 2.0c)

I started using Fuji dvd-r but have now switched to Ritek dvd-r g03 because of price.
I have read that to use this media (Ritek) one needed to upgrade their Sony to firmware 1.0f. I have 2.0c nothing to upgrade to.

I've used DVDXCopy and DVD Decrypter (ISO mode) to successfully backup DVDs with both the Fuji and the Ritek using the dru500ax.

Here's where the problem starts:

If I decrypt with DVD Decrypter and then use RecordNow DX (make data disc, wizard or manually) using the Fuji dvd-r it makes a perfect backup. However, when I do the same thing using the Ritek dvd-r I get a recording error (wizard) or terminated with errors (manually). RecordNow Dx tells me in the help section that either my disks are bad or dirty.

This makes no sense! The dru500ax is obviously reading the Riteks because I'm able to use them with DVDXCopy and DVD Decrypter (ISO mode). But when I use them with RecordNow DX they won't work. Is my problem with RecordNow DX, with the Ritek's, or hell with the Sony?

PLEASE HELP

Well, wish my reply contained a solution for you m8. I actually just wanted to add in my probs with RecordNowMax that no one can seem to figure out. :(

I can burn DVD-Rs with DVD Decryptor just fine. They burn and play perfectly.

However, RNMax will only burn -RW properly. When I burn -R, the program refuses to close the disc, therefore renedering it useless and unplayable. I have tried to go back and close the disc using other programs but I cannot (b/c DVD-R doesn't support packet-writing I suppose?).

For -RW, whether I set it to TAO - Open or TAO - Closed, it closes the -RW. I set it to TAO - Closed for -R but it doesn't close the disc. Should I try seting it to TAO - Open ?? Though that makes NO SENSE AT ALL, it's the only thing I haven't tried.

Maybe someone can help us both out with these Record Now probs.

btw - I'm using a Pio 105 and OptoDiscs. Thinking our probs are totally software-related.

Ritek are very poor media (applies both for CDR and DVDR), and quite probably not properly supported by your firmware. Fuji's are top class, and in the end cheaper than the randomly coasterized Riteks.
@ 420: which is the famous manufacturer of those "Optodisks"? (check your disk ATIP).
The Pioneer despises even media of average quality. I think your problems are totaly software related, until the opposite is proven.

For info
If you are using a Pioneer 105/A05 the ritek 4x discs work just fine burnt over 300 discs with them so far and had no problems with them. They come up with a Ritek G04 id and the 105 picks them up fine.

OptoDisc is the actual manufacturer of the discs. :) Actually, OptoDisc -RW is what comes with the Cendyne 105. ;) As I only have problems when using RecordNow, I suppose I will try the new Nero unless someone can figure out what's causing the probs. Shame though, RN-Max is supposed to be a great app.

I use Riteks frequently with my DRU500A with absolutely NO problems. If they are cheap discs, they sure don't act like it.

As far as the apps I use:

DVDXcopy
DVD Decrypter
RecordNow Max (the real one, not the one packed with the drive)
Nero
ReelDVD
MyDVD
DVD-It
BackupMyPC

None of these gives me any problems with Riteks.

Gear is crap... it frequently fails halfway through a burn.

My advice is that you try using the real version of RecordNow Max and see if it helps.
