drive image 2002 info on plus

question im using windows98se and would like to back up the whole drive to another drive then format the drive and put xp pro
on it to try out what id basically like to know is if i didnt like xp pro
and formatted the drive again how would i put back the windows98se i backed up back on the drive after its been formatted it sound confusing but thats the gist of it whats the best software drive image 2002 or can it be done at all if so how
and what with are cdr's better to back up to then a spare hard drive

If you only have 1 partition on your drive, it may be easiest to backup directly to CD-R(W).

If you have 2 partions (the second one having empty space of over 50% the size of the first (boot) partition, you can use DI to back up the first to the second partition with 50% (high) compression. If you also break it up in advanced properties to 700mb chunks, you can then install XP on the first partition after the backup, load your CDR software, and then burn the 700mb chunks to CD's. To restore, you just again boot from DOS/DI floppies and restore the first partion.
 
boot into dos via floppy i take it so whats the best way to back to
cdr's or another hd im new so need specific detail step by step if possible i have one partition o the drive if i backed up to cdrs
and then booted from a floopy how do i then use the cd'r backup from dos details please
