Don't Be A Jerk...

Hello everyone.

I've only recently taken to all this SVCD lark because I've just got a shiny new DVD player. I'm familiar with encoding to DIVX and I've converted a few of these now to SVCD, but I'm having problems with a DVD.

I'm converting from NTSC to PAL using the template in TMPGEnc and I'm using a CBR (for now) of 1,524k video, 224k audio. Everything looks good and sounds good, except for a very slight skip every few seconds or so. A lot of the time you may not notice it but if you're looking for it you can catch it. There are times when there's something large moving past the shot that really jerks along.

If I lower the bitrate it still jerks.

Anyone got any ideas as to what is causing this and how to cure it?

Converting NTSC to PAL is not that simple. The jerks are because TMPGEnc has to insert extra frames to convert from 23.976fps (assuming film source) to 25fps.

What you need to do is speed it up to 25fps and then speed the audio up to match or better yet, just leave it NTSC.

Yes I had exactly the same problem skiping frames. I have found that the templates in TEMPg engine are best left alone. If your souce is 25 frames pal then leave it like that.

As everyone says, if its NTSC source, leave it at NTSC as 99% of PAL DVD Players will playback NTSC stuff just fine as well. (Not true the other way around though).

The video source is 29.(whatever the other NTSC is)

No idea how to speed things up, or slow things down. Your help would be appreciated.

Well for the video with TMPGEnc, you just set the new framerate and then tick the do no framerate conversion box. It will then speed up or slow down the video to match the new framerate.

The audio however will remain the same length and therefor be out of sync. That is untill you speed it up/slow it down to match.

There are various programs out there for the audio, some giving better results than others.
