Does this make any sense? HW Sound Acceleration...

I have almost no problems burning anything on my system except for any attempt to burn a DivX AVI to VCD; which, however converted, led to a complete system hang at some point in the burning.
So through a process of elimination and just sort of trying anything, I disabled hardware acceleration and turned down the sampling quality in the DirectX controls of my sound card, a SoundBlaster Audigy 1. I was then able to burn three VCD discs with no problem. I turned the sound accel. back up to check, and got a system hang again when I tried writing a VCD.... then off and burned through without a hitch.
I have limited experience with this and I'm just trying to decide if this makes any sense.
I was led to try this simply because I'd read that some audio codecs could cause DivX->VCD burning problems, so I thought I'd try fiddling with some more sound settings to see what happens.
Got joy but I'm still not certain if I've actually found a solution.
Any thoughts?

When it comes to the actual burning it should really make no difference what the data is. Having problems with the actual conversion is a different matter though.
