Does my drive dislike Memorex RW's?

I have a Buslink (Liteon 52246s) 52X24x52 drive and for the most part it works great. However I'm not sure if it's my drive or the re-writables I bought, but it's really flaky with the Memorex RW's I bought when I got my burner. The RW discs I got are the 12X RW's and they burn well the first time, but if I erase them and reburn to them, then for some odd reason my mp3/cd player can't read them! My best friend also has the same Memorex RW's and he's having similar troubles and his drives are different makes and models.. Are Memorex RW's just junk?

RW discs are best for regular data.In many cases audio on Rewritables won't play in many regular cdrom drives(especially car decks).I think if you use a regular Cdr for audio and mp3"s you will have better luck.Just my thoughts as I never use RW's.;)

Or try a complete erase, versus a quick one, don't know if it will help.

I use a Panasonic Cd/MP3 player which can read cdr and RW discs. I prefer RW's for the obviouse reason I can just keep re-using the same disc and not waste a ton of CDR's for custom play lists. Right now I have only 1 RW that reliably works, but oddly enough it's an older Memorex RW disc. Weird.. However the old one can only be written at a max of 8x.. I wonder if my burn speed might make the difference with these discs.. Hopfully I can find more reliable RW's that can burn at higher speeds than 8X, but for now I have less than 5 Memorex RW's that are quickly becoming coffie coasters.

I have only used the quick erase, but I haven't taken into consideration using the full erase. I'll give that a try and see if I can recover one of my coffie coasters. :)

Yeah...sounds like time to change brands then.;)

You're right, many standalones work well with RW.Didn't know you were using one.;)

Oh yeah, try full erase first.Make sure not to overburn a RW it will ruin them.

I think I found the solution to my problem.

I cranked my burn speed down to 8X and so far playback on my mp3/CD player seems to be smooth. I have also made a couple of changes. First off I noticed a "wizard" program that comes with Nero that allowed me to burn a "Mp3" cd.. I was just burning the mp3's as data before, but somehow I don't think that makes any difference in the burn process. I think turning my burn speed down to 8X was the key.. I may try higher burn speeds than 8X but 8X seems to be the sweet spot at the moment.. At least with these particular discs. I suspect other brands probably would burn more reliably at higher speeds. Anyway it seems that I can start re-using my Memorex re-writables again. I'm happy about that, but disapointed that I can't burn at 12X reliably..

Also I noticed another thing that is sort of odd.. If I burn the RW's at 12X, the mp3's play perfectly fine on my PC, but on my mp3 cd player they artifact like crazy and that's where I have a burn issue. This may be more of a compatability issue with my mp3 cd player and these discs and how they are burned.

I just want to note one more thing.. I can burn mp3's on a 48X cdr at 52X and they turn out just fine, so this leads me to beleive it's more of a media issue.. Am I right in making this assumption?

I have a pack of Memorex 4x-10x RW that are 100% coasters in MY Liteon - my old drive didn't like the 1-4x Memorex, but paradoxically, this drive handles them ok, despite some people saying that HS drives handle non-HS media badly.

I will never buy Memorex media again!

At this point it seems that turning my burn speed down to 8X is a key factor in keeping artifacts out of my mp3's.

I have a theory on what is happening, but I could be way off.. I think when you do a quick erase, only the directory is erased, but the data is still there. When you reburn a RW, your just re-writing over the old data. My guess is when the burner is re-writing over the old data that it doesn't erase all of the old data as it go's, and the old data gets mixed in with the mp3. I know if that's the case, that would cause my mp3's to sound like they are loaded with artifacts on my mp3/cd player.. So why is it my pc can read these mp3's with out the artifacting? I think truthfully my drives are reading the artifact data, but then they just ignore that data just as they should. Both my Lite-On's are designed to ignore bad data, but only keep the good data and send it on to the PC.. So does this mean if I put my disc's in a older cd-rom they might sound just as bad on my mp3/cd player.. My guess is they would likly sound as bad. What do you guys think?
