Does more RAM help burning DVDs?

First off, I'm running a P4 1.4, Maxtor DMA 100/7200 RPM drive (40 GB, 1 NTFS partition), 512 MB of PC800 RAM, a Pioneer DVD-R A05 and I use Nero and RecordNow MAX almost exclusively.

My question is, does more RAM help with burning stuff (CDs and/or DVDs)? More specifically what I mean, in my case, when ever I burn DVDs, it thrashes my hard drive (i.e. it's really busy) and even after I finish burning, it takes my PC several minutes to “catch-up” and resume it’s normal speed. I know that this is due to the necessity for a very large swap file (up to 4.6 GB), but I'm curious if I had more RAM, would it help off set the swap file more, so it wouldn't tax the hard drive so much (like if I went up to 1 GB)?

I have a follow up question as well. Does having a partition set aside for swap/temp files help the burning? Like if I made a 5 GB partition and used that as the temp file location in my burning apps?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Hi gamecaptor:)

Nice system(lot better than mine)

1\Yep, more Ram will help U in Win2000 & XP, but not with Win9x.The more Ram, the less it should thrash Ur disk. Not sure how much XP can handle, think it about 4Gb.So 1Gb should help U out. What size is Ur swap file anyways.Windows has always been crap at allocating space for swapfile. If U right click My Computer & select properties. In 1 of the tabs, think it system 1, it gives U option of setting Ur own size 4 it

2\Only if the Partion is on another drive, seprate from Ur Windows Drive.Read if it on same drive in diff partion it can really slow things down.

Hope It Helps

Intel Application Accelerator ?

@ gamecaptor,

Suggest looking into installing the Intel Application Accelerator.

This utility enables faster delivery of data from the hard drive to the processor and other system level hardware.

O&O CleverCache Pro can more effectively manage your swap (pagefiles) than XP or 2K. If you have 1gB RAM, O&O, and disable swap to disk with a tweaking package, things will speed up.

Yep good advice, but isnt the intel prog causing some probs with nero.Remember a few post here about it causin slowdowns

Though ipdave's idea sounds a goodie, i disalbe the swapfile on win9x with an entry in system.ini in 386enh

ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1That does it 4 me, but it not 4 2000/XP
