Divx tutorial

I'm useing the latest virtualdub and trying to make a good divx avi for DVD2SVCD the quality i get off the satelite is great and the avi is good but when i try to convert to DIVX the quality is garbage,i do not think i know the full story how to use these programs to make a good DIVX avi file for DVD2SVCD,can anyone help me out.

i use bitrate 1400 that i previously was told to use by yourself,i find the file blocky,and long and thin,i just wan't to get the best picture possible and i am experimenting with avi's,mpeg1 and direct to svcd,but i tend to be a picky person and hate the bits of blockiness you see in a picture.
