I think both things you want to do, are impossible right now 
You know, the XBox runs a Windows like OS, so people do already know much about how the stuff works ...
But on the PSX2, only the developers get a idea about HOW the system works, and I think this developers, who make money with their games/products, aren´t really interessted in getting legal troubles by coding a DivX player for a PSX2 ..
So personally I doubt that there is, or ever will be a DivX player for the PSX2

I have read stories about some suposedly able to play DivX on an XBox but absolutely no details given. Believe it or not! PSX2, never read anywhere that DivX playback is possible.
I have also read there are a couple of new standalone DVD Players that can now play MPEG4 (similar to DivX). As NB has said, the legality of DivX has not been sorted yet so noone is quickly jumping in for DivX playback until its sorted.

currently there is no divx or mpeg(vcd) player for the ps2. i do know of some spanish coders that are working on that as we speak.
the xbox already has two media players, search around some of the nice sites such as h**p://xbox-scene.com for more info on those.

I am thinking about buying a XBox or PSX2, but not sure yet.
Mainly I would love the DVD and DivX playing of course, and the games ...
And I would buy a pre modded box, I am surely able to mod myself, since I have got a good electronical education, but in the end, always something may go wrong ...
Any info about buying a pre modded XBox or PSX2 ?

true you can play divx on DREAMCAST but has to be right codex and the right dimensions which i still cant get right bah !! lol and you can play VCD'S on dreamcast there is a boot disk that you can download that allows standard vcd 2 format cds to be played back on it !!!
and im sure u can play VCDS on ps2's as they can play dvds !? not got got one or anyone to test this but im sure they can play compliant vcd standard made disks !?
unknown bout divx on ps2 !? maby maby not !? if they can on dreamcast i dont see why it cannot be possible on ps2 as its more powerfull than a dreamcast by far !?! but i spose they do have to be chipped to play copied disks as divx are not VCD just plain cds with no compliant standard format !?

yeah .. I think dreamcast supports only 480x480 or something like that ... but it works ... also Mp3 playback works ...(computerTechnik --> ct´--> heise)
I think I heard something about xbox and divx --> possible soon..but I´m not sure ...
@ NB ... there r a lot Xbox images out there I would also go for a premodded ...
