divx 5.02 settings/output - wired ?

hi all !

got some "problems" with divx 5.02 bitrate settings here.
i try to encode some dv material. i made a divx from a 2h captured tv movie. the file is about 1gb big and the quality seems to be ok.

then i tried some footage (2 min) testing with bitrate/pass changes - and here are my problems:

with 1 pass encoding: i got the same filesizes and qualities everytime, although i change the bitrate from min to max. in fact i encoded the dv movie (2h) once again with different "1 pass" bitrate and got the same quality and filesize again. wired?

with 1 pass quality setting: min settings - got buckets (i expect that), but pretty high filesize.
max setting - same quality as with "1 pass", but big filesize.

with 2 pass (first pass): the encoding starts (filesizes seem to be ok), but media player rejects playing the file.

with 2 pass (second pass): works, and i can view it with media player. but the quality isn't better than "1 pass", but the filesize is pretty high.

now i am confused. what to to?
or is this divx encoding primarily sticked to the output resolution?

thx in advance for any help!

You are correct, the quality is adjusted to fit to the CD size. However, a 2 pass will give better pic quality in the faster action parts than will a 1 pass.

The 1st pass of a 2 pass encode is not a proper AVI, thats why nothing will play it. Its only a file that finds where the action (or high data needed bits are) or non-action parts are so as to maximize data rate in action parts and lower in non-action parts when not needed. Confussed further?

size

but where the divx codec gets the information to adjust the quality to fit the cd size. and what is the cd size? is it 1 cd or spanned to 2 cds? (why do i get a 1gb file). can i set the file size to a specified value.

thx for any help

Sorry I assumed you were using Vidomi for the conversion, it justvworks it all out for you. Have a read of the Dvd to Divx tutorial in the Tutorial section.
