diskboot error

i installed xp pro on a HD as a stand-alone slave
now i want to change the jumper and use it as a stand-alone master
the OS alternates between accepting it and not:
the not accepting it means i get a "diskboot error"

FIXMBR from the recovery console didn't work
i have no virus

any ideas?

thanks for your prompt and friendly responses.
unfortunately, that didn't work, but it got me thinking that if you both concur
that this is a) a fixable problem with a b) doable solution (aren't they the same?)
that i better start back at 1st principles.

western digital's reference page
http://support.wdc.com/techinfo/general/jumpers.asp

even thought there was no specification for a single-slave configuration,
i put the jumper in the dual slave position and the HD accepted that; so....
i figured it would accept it as a dual master, but no!

so now it's jumperless and starts and shuts down 5x in a row is sufficient
to disarm any "intermitency theory".

my contact with the forum and your advice really helped

now to post the next problem
