"Disk not in drive" and other annoying errors

okay, let's see if i can get this straight because i'm at wit's end...
I have an NEC DVD + RW ND-1100A that came with my kick butt new Dell system. I also have the Roxio Easy CD and DVD creator 6.0.
So, I made a cool DVD on their DVD Builder... cute kids waving, music playing, etc...
I rush out and buy Memorex DVD-R to burn the DVD.
Imagine my surprise when it didn't work. It kept saying there is no disk in the drive. (??) Then when I was closing I got an error message that said it was unable to detect an ASPI Manager. So like a good girl, I went and downloaded ADAPTEC's ASPI manager and downloaded it. I used their check program to make sure it was running, and sure enough, it was all good.
Yet when I went back to Roxio, I got the same message. On a whim, I tried another DVD program I found on my computer called Sonic MyDVD. Immediately an error message came up saying Unable to initialize ASPI Manager. I don't know why since according to Adaptec, it's working fine.
On a side note, I have successfully burned many music CDs using this same drive and Acoustica's burning software.
Oh yeah, I also installed the latest driver from NEC and the Roxio updates to see if that would help. :eek:( No luck
Help!!

I cant help re the s/ware cos I dont use any of em (& wouldnt even try)

Need I say more?
You guys crack me up! I wish I knew as much as you, but this entire DVD burning world is new to me...
So I take the DVD Burner sucks? It came with my Dell so I didn't think anything of it. And the Memorex should be thrown away??? In favor of?

To answer the earlier question, my Adaptec is version 4.71.2

I was reading about XP needing administrative rights, but I have those so that can't be it. How frustrating!

Thanks for putting up with me.

U have Got DVDR- (the memorex)

Your burner needs DVDR+

Just buy a few DVDR+ & give it a whirl & let us know how U get on

@bockert we are just VERY to the point bud ;)

I really dont think the guys here intended it as a poke at your capabilitys bud i would say at least 99% of us here if not all of us here learn something NEW every single day :)

So dont take it to heart if we just jump straight in and point out the obvious bud it just saves you a lot of head banging later on and comming back and asking a second time :)

a little tip here if you have a pack of dvdr disks that are still unused take them back with your till receipt and ask for an exchange for DVD+r and tell them you bought them in error im sure they will be glad to help you exchange them :)

Yep,a simple mistake.Your writer will only burn Dvd+R.You bought Dvd-R.Your writer will not write to them,it is a different format entirely.Something to keep an eye on in the future. ;)

having same problem, drive won't reconize blank cds

Hi, i'm new at this forum stuff, but i'm glad to see i'm not the only one who is having a hard time, i just got a new dell fully loaded up to be ready to burn and copy cd's and dvds, if only it was that easy. I've messed with it for hours trying to burn a dvd, called tech support, read the manual etc......I keep getting the same type of errors "no media in recording device" or "insert disc now" even thou it's already in. My computer won't reconize the blank cds? Did you get it figured out? All i want is to burn something, anything, just to know it is possible on my computer. If everything was pre-installed why am i having so much trouble, sorry to bother you with it, but any help won't be greatly appreiciated!!!!!!!!!!!! :confused:

It's like VHS and Betamax - only worse - just imagine if VHS and Betamax tapes both FITTED, but only one would work - that's where DVD writing is at NOW.

Unless you have a dual (+/-) writer, you must be sure which media you need - and for some writers, you often need to know which brand of media works well, which is ok, and which to avoid.

For +R, most drives seem to like media with a Ritek G04 dye - many online media stares make a point of indicating the dye, and in some cases, which writers they would recommend the media for.

Well I have the same DVD drive and I am having a problem formatting and deleting some dvd+RW. I get the same error in some and on others my computer freezes when I put the disk in to erase the disk. I am using windows xp and roxio 6.0. I think the problem might be in roxio, but It may also need a firm war update. Can some on help me out as to where to get firm war updates for the ND-1100A drive, and also help me to find a solution to the problem?

Thanks

Hi tony_rw, Welcome to our forum! :cool:

Can some on help me out as to where to get firm war updates for the ND-1100A drive,
at the drive fabricator's homepage: http://www.de.nec.de./softwareoverview2.php/id/557
there is a media recommendation list too;

and also help me to find a solution to the problem?
uninstall all burning software; reinstall only the thing you really need (e.g. Nero);
