Discussion Question-ISO,Bin,CUE & RAR vs ZIP?

Is there a site where ISO, .bin, .cue files are explained as to what exactly they are and best used for? What are their differences and what is the purpose of each?

Secondly, what is the difference between .zip and .rar files, the advantages of each? When is it preferable to use .zip vs .rar or vice versa?
Thanks

Thanks roadworker.
Just curious....why are some programs available for downloads as ISO files? Would it not make it easier for the downloaded to just downlaod as a .zip or .rar file and reconstruct the progran as an executable? This is in contrast to downloading a .zip file, unzipping to a .bat and multiple other files, then double clicling the .bat file, and them using again another third party file to put together an executable file. Not that I am complaining, I am obviously not so familiar with the formats to quite understand the various ways to download and put programs back together again.
I am hoping to learn more about this.
Thanks

first jll keepitshort.Answering that would bringit 1000 more*becouse* *why*or........Just live with that.Somebody who made it that way(cracked game or app or whatever)had a reason to do that(or he just wantedthat way).j could answer youy all that, but would take lots of time(which j really dont have),and btw for all that formats there is a nice app to work with so what is rhe prob???:) .Tomake it easier j give my pers pref, tryout and you can findthem all on downloads:) For all compression;zip rar ace to open or make or selfextr try winrar, and many more txt nfo ........ For all images (iso) clone nero ezcd...........use win iso last ver. 5.3 winrar 2.90(if itd newone didnt comeout in meantime).Hope this help

NP zver.....so it's simply the preference of the sie of the download. I was just curious if there was a special function or reason to use a specific type of file in a given situation.
Sounds like you answered my question.
And you are right. This has given me the opportunity and pleasure to try different programs that I probably might never have used.
Cheers

Thanks roadworker. The explanation was great. But now my curriosity is getting the best of me.
How would one go about splitting a program, then going through the steps to arrive with multiple .rar files.
Secondly how does one decide on the size to make the .rar files? Can a .rar file be only so large?

rar can be bigger and smaller as the guy said. You can split each file if you want.jm using filesplit.its possiblle to split 1 m to 10 pieces for example). And your earlier quest. why woulf somebody split big rar and make it small, simply cose some people have 56 k .Imagine you download windows hp(500 m)and after 4 days you got 480 and you disconect by mist.(if you cannot resume youre f....d).But if the files were spllited you woild have 90,would connect on net again and take the rest:) .Also about why would somebody prefer iso than rar;its 1 file>>>not 100 less chance to be corrypt more chaqnce that everything is there dont need to extract(decompres) couse uou can open with every iso program got dsl(fast)so ;right click save as and youre done dont need to repeat procedure for all files hope this helps
