Dell computers?

I am fairly new to the forum here but have visited the site alot...figuered this would be a good place to ask.....well I bit the bullet and ordered a new Dell computer

specs

intel 2.0 gigahertz proc
256 mb ddr sdram (I plan too upgrade to 512 mb ddr soon)
40 gig 7200 rpm hard drive (I have another 40 gig 7200 rpm drive that I will put in there and maybe use it to make a raid array for 80 gigs :) )
sb live sound card
56k modem
10/100 pci nic
64 mb geforce 2 video card
dell? 24x cdr drive
dell? 16x dvd drive
dell keyboard
logitech mouse
dell m991 19" monitor
harmon and kardon speakers with sub woffer
with xp home loaded

I have a new tdk 32/10/40 burner that I will slap into it too and maybe junk the burner that came with the dell

I also have a black antec workstation case (looks kinda like the alienware pc cases) with a 350 watt power supply with 4 antec fans in it that I think I am going to put all the mobo and cards into as soon as I get it

does this sound good for a new buy at 1600 bucks minus like 300 dollars in rebates? and have any of you had good experiences with dell?

wickedz2000,

Sounds very good. Geforce2 is a little out of date these days, but still is a great card (I do have one myself). Dell don't make their own CD and DVD, but they have used Sony and Toshiba in the past. Its a good buy. Enjoy it ;)

sounds like a good buy. Dell UK have excellent support, web based and phone (same goes as US is suppose). If any problems and within warranty, its onsite replacement, and everything is a-ok again. One things for sure they are damn quiet :D (especially compared to the one i built myself).

Hi,

I just got my new Dell 8200 and was hoping for a Lite-On but I got the other 24X that Dell ships: the NEC 7900A. Oh well.

I purchased a Dell Dimension 4400 only last month and it came with a Liteon LTD 163 DVD drive (which was a bonus). I put my Plex 2410A in one of the empty slots and its a nice little 2some!!The rest of your machine sounds about the same as mine except I'm running a P4 1.8 GHZ with 512 DDR ram (well worth it). It goes like lightning!!! You won't be wanting more speed!!
The only problem? with the Liteon drive that comes with the Dell is that they use their own firmware and not Liteon's. If you flash back to the original firmware (which I think is possible) then you void your warranty. To be honest i don't know why Dell have written their own firmware, but it doesn't seem to be effecting the performance of the drive - its got very good CloneCD performance for a DVD drive.

This site may come in handy if your machine comes with a Liteon drive h**p://digitri.tk/

Have fun!:D

I don't think they write their own firmware. They get LiteOn to change the header to say 'Dell' Instead of 'LiteOn'. Everything else stays the same.
