DAT to MPEG still problem

I want to convert some MPEG still pictures on a VCD created by Nero back into MPG files for use with VCD Easy (since Nero's menu system is crap). I think that the DAT files made by Nero contain two pictures, one high res 704x576 and one low res 352x288 (for compatibility with older DVD/VCD players). Unfortunately, both VCD Easy itself and also VCD Gear convert the DAT into an MPG with two 352x288 images in it, stripping out the hi res image.

How can I do the conversion and retain the hi res image?

Unforunately VCD is fixed at 352x288 (PAL) so there are NO high res mode saved with it, hence nothing to strip out. I think your thinking of KodakCD format.

I agree that VCD movies are fixed at 352x288, however, mpeg still images stored in the first track (or the "segment" folder if viewed on a PC) can be 704x576 in the VCD 2.0 spec. Nero and VCD Easy encode jpg images into a DAT or an MPG respectively at both resolutions (so that old players that can only handle VCD 1.1 can still show the images).

However, if you copy these still (segment) images off a VCD created by Nero and try to strip out the extra info recorded in the DAT files to turn them into MPEGs using VCD Easy or VCD Gear they must assume that the files are actually movies and re-create both images in the new file at 352x288.

I don't know why neither package can recognise that the DAT file contains a high res image.
