Cutting an AVI - problem with VirtualDub

Hi, I've recently downloaded a avi with edonkey. I can see it & hear it OK with Divx Player and other players.

Now I want to cut most of it, just to keep a 10 minutes clip. In the past I've done such things with VirtualDub, but I can't with this file.

When I try to start the dubbing, I get an error message: 'The requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the input match those of the requested format"
I get it both if I select Direct stream copy or Full processing mode - and of course not if I select No audio.
Saving (extracting) the audio as wav in Full processing mode gives me the same error.

The File informatio option states that the video is Divx 5.02 while the audio stream has:
- Sampling rate : 48.000
- Channels : 2 (stereo)
- sample precision : 16 bit
- Compression : unknown (tag 0055)

Therefore I guess that the audio is encoded with some codec VirtualDub can't understand - but DivxPlayer and other players do.

Any help will be welcomed !

Thanks

I've extracted the audio as wav in Direct stream and I've got a wav file; after renaming it to mp3, it sounds, soI guess I'm progressing :D

VirtualDUB doesnt like VBR encoded MP3's, thats why the error. Most new DivX movies now have VBR MP3's as audio. Try NanDUB (get from download section of _www.doom9.net) as it can handle VBR MP3's

Thanks, man, it's made things easier ! :) :) :)

Btw, what are the differences between VirtualDub and NanDub - besides the one you pointed out? They look very similar to me ! Which one I should I keep for my infrequent video editing?

VirtualDUB has open source code and the author of NanDUB just modified it to handle VBR MP3's, AC3, Ogg, etc, etc. Unfortunately he no longer supports the program and has no been updated for a long time.

As for AVI editor, I have all 3. NanDUB, latest VirtualDUB and VirtualDUB ver 1.3c to handle ASF files. Cant live without anyone of them but if I had to pick one, it would be latest VirtualDUB that I use the most.
