so you are saying that DIVX is the same as avi?
Yes, what is the extension of your divx file. Is it like MOVIE.AVI ? then its an AVI and using the DivX (or Xvid) codec to compress the the movie data within.

the ext is AVI. i want to convert the avi to a dvd compatible file for burning. i have AVI movies i want to put on DVD to watch in a stand alone player.

when avis are encoded to dvd, wht type of MPEG is it being encoded to?
or if you know where i can read up on this myself it would be most helpful!

sorry to be a bother, but if your avi was decompressed with divx to avi can you use the same program to make it dvd compliant? or can i make it a solid avi and then DVD compliant?
i read that tutorial and it is a little confusing right now but i'm working on it.

An AVI is not dvd compliant and can never be. A DVD requires an MPEG-2 format file and that is completely different to a MPEG2 file. Like comparing the written language English to, say, Chinese. Both languages but both have almost nothing in common and difficult to translate exactly An AVI and a MPEG2 are both movie formats but have nothing in common. Luckily one can be traslated (encoded) from one to the other.

You MUST convert an AVI to a DVD compliant MPEG2 file if you want to burn it as a Compliant DVD. The Tutorial simply sets out a procedure to follow that will do the conversion for you relatively simple with little input from you, thats all. Nothing more, nothing less.

Remember, there are 2 parts to any movie, the Video and the Audio. Both are converted separately. AVI are notorious for having problems, particularly downloaded files. Some problems affect the video, some the audio. There are about 100 ways to make a DivX AVI as well, different codec, different versions of the codec, different sound formats, etc, etc. The list goes on and on. The Tute will convert 90-95% of them no probs automatically, some will involve a bit of hard work on your part to manually extract/convert the video or audio. Life wasnt ment to be easy. :D
