crashes

For some reason my computer has been crashing an awful lot lately. Always the same type of error message, memory related.
For example, while opening the "Folder options, File types" tab this one:

"The instruction at "0x77d46d88" referenced memory at "0x00dbb97c". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program"

I have no idea where to look for the cause of the problem. Does anyone know what these messages could mean?

Biggest possibility is mad RAM, but it can also be CPU overheat or malfunctioning HD/controller.
For starters run a full memtest86 from a floppy or a CD-ROM.
Here's an alternative close to the first one.

I still don't know what is causing this problem, but after reinstalling XP a few times I was fed up with it. It tried SP2 and only SP1 with all security updates. It looks like the problem might be caused by one of the recent updates (just guessing), because this never happened until a few weeks ago.

Now I'm using Windows 2000: no more problems.

By the way, I tried streamlining sp2-xp in order to make a new cd. The same crash occured, even while doing that.
