What OS are you using? If it's XP, right click on my computer icon on desktop, on the menu that appears click properties, Select the hardware tab then select device manager. You should now be looking at tree of devices on your pc. Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and right click on the channel your DVD writer is on (usualy Secondary), click properties. Click the avance settings and here you should be able to change the device transfer mode to PIO only. If you can't change this you probably don't have the correct permisions in your uses account. I think it's the same process for win 2K.

Hope this helps

uninstall the secondary ide channel and reboot. windows will reinstall the ide channel automatically and run the device in DMA mode.

there's no need to disable anything in a normally functioning system. it can be seen from the OP's post that his drive is running in PIO mode, which is the problem.
