Copying VCR to Computer for CDR

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew of a proggie which I could get / find which would allow for decent copying of VCR tapes to MPEG video?

I recently got an Osprey 200 PCI Audio / Video capture card for the system, and since would like to convert the old tapes I have laying around to VCD via ripping them to the computer, then out to CD.

Anyone have any good idea's? Have tried Ulead Video Studio 5 and 6, MGI VideoWave III, and Windows Media Creator (WMV) for an aweful attempt at converting to AVI, then to MPEG. Needless to say, they always look like junk, and I am just really frustrated at this point. The card wasn't cheap, does ok in AVI, but not that great (VCR tape looks better than the AVI or WMV output.

Any advice or pointers which could be given would be greatly appreciated. BTW, converting the tapes which were originally NTSC format if that matters (remaining NTSC). (leaving them that way since I will be moving home to US soon.

Thanks in Advance. :)

have you tried using Virtual Dub? (as avi then convert with tmpgenc for your final mpeg [vcd compliant])

There is also Power VCD & many variants of such.

PS
I moved this to a better location

Welcome to the forum m8. hope you like your stay.

VirtualDUB does a great job (as S_P said ) and its free. Best is to save to AVI using Huffyuv codec but you will need a VERY LARGE hard drive for the 15+ gig file it can create. Next best is to simpley use DivX 5.x codec. Then convert to SVCD or VCD with Tmpgenc. Read the Tutorial section on how to convert the AVI to VCD.

CinePlayer DVR (from _www.cinax.com ) is about the best for capturing directly to VCD (or SVCD) .

Another good capture prog is is AVI_IO ( see _http://www.nct.ch/multimedia/avi_io/index.html ) but saves to AVI only.

Thanks for the input.

Just wanted to say thanks, for the replies. Tried Virtual Dub first, and could not get the audio to synch (set timing all of the way out to -300, but still seemed to come in and out of time). Then tried AVI_IO. Had better luck with this software, stayed right in line (sounds and video).

Going to try to use TMPeng now to rip the AVI to MPEG to cut out to a VCD (wow....this is going to take a long time to get done for the 50+ tapes I have. But will be worth it rather than worrying about the tapes.

BTW, anyone tried the B*lkin USB Videobus II yet? If you have not, then definitely do not. Plugged it into the USB and USB 2 connector's on the old P4, and the input was absolutely horrible. For $176.00 AUD+shipping (That was the kicker( $100 US)), was a horrible waste of money, for $350 AUD incluing shipping ($200 US) the Osprey 200 is a VERY nice piece of hardware, really good frame rate, nice audio, connects right into the VCD via RCA, and has a mini-din for S-Vid in. (so did the b*lkin, but boy was is a piece of junk).

Just thought that I would let everyone know before they make the same mistake I did.

Thanks again for the help, GREATLY appreciated.
