Converting from VHS to DVD

I have successfully converted more than 200 VHS tapes of Rugby matches on to DVD by using a domestic DVD recorder (Panasonic) on to DVD RAM discs then edit with TmpGenc Editor and burn on to various DVD+_R. Has worked fine. If files too big..DVD shrink comes into play..again all works well and so far all DVD's have worked on my domestic DVD players. Minor problem now is that recent DVD's are in widescreen. While the Panasonic will record widescreen OK the editor only recognizes these as narrow screen. I can get round this by re-encoding the MPEG2 files using TmPGenc Xpress3 and rearranging the aspect ratio. However, this takes aaaages!!! Typically 12 hours on a 3.2 GB machine for 5 hours of programme. Is there a faster encoder out there. Pity DVD Shrink does not include this function. Any advice would be welcome

Then just use DVD Patcher to patch the header back to 16:9 or use Ifoedit to patch the IFO files back to 16:9. I do that all the time if I accidently encode an AVI to 4:3 when it was 16:9 or the other way around. Get it from doom9.net download page, you need to turn on "Show All S/VCD Tools" to see it.

Have you tried using TMPGEnc DVD Author instead? I record from TV with my Sharp settop DVD-R/W and then pull off as an MPG with DVD Author, edit, add menus, burn (in PAL and NTSC)..

IFOedit works fine..completely solves the problem. Many thanks. DVD patcher when I change the aspect ratio simply produces a split screen, the right hand side of which is just a green blank. IfoEdit is fine.

I am just wondering how log time it takes you to edit a RAM disk and what soft do you use to convert RAM VRO files to VOB DVD?
I also have a JVC standalone recorder and try to find the most efficient way to work with VHS conversion.
To edit RAM disk a quite painfull process in my opinion, to convert it to DVD even worse. As I have a choice of RAM or RW (VOB) recording I think VOB options is more efficient.
What is your experience?

Personally, I use VOB not VR. Less hassle, TMPGEnc DVD Author reads it perfectly and I edit and add menus and reburn quickly. Then erase the -RW and do it again...
