Converting AVI

Hi ya. I am new here, the forum looks great and I look forward to being able to contribute. Please forgive this as a first post. I have genuinely trailed the forums and other help sites but can't answer this simple question.

I have a film that is german with english subtitles that came as two avi files that played in media player.

I wanted to burn to DVD, so after looking at the help guides I installed TMPENc Express 3.0. I went through that programme and encoded both files into one. The wizard said I would be creating a DVD file that can be used in Europe.

The problem was that after 8 hours when it finished I got one file that was called a TMPENC Express project file! I have tried to burn to DVD using Nero and Clone DVD and it just doesnt work. I thought when it said it was converting to DVD it was actually doing that? There are certianly no vob etc files, just one 4.3gb file. Can anyone help me with this problem that has cost me loads of time and bandwidth. Your help would be most appreciated. Cheers

steve

Next i used Nero ision express. This worked until the last 10 seconds! Then the computer froze.

I used WinAVI to create the dvd files, but it doesnt create any audio files!

For avi 2 dvd conversion i had found that freeware rules,so;First join those 2 avi files in one with virtual dub or whichever you like, and after use use a film mashine or dvd2svcd to convert to dvd..
For movies with subtitles i always used dvd2svcd and cce2.50 as encoder..
Just when you click on conversion, put a checkmark to add subtitles on the same bar-you ll see it when you click on conversion to start ;)

Ok, I finally succeeded, but can someone tell me how and why i succeeded and why othe rmethods didnt work?

What I did was got the mpg that TMPEnc 3.0 express created. Burnt to an image using Nero Image Express. Next I burnt onto DVD using Alcohol 120%.

This worked, but why? There were no DVD files like vobs created.

When i used Winavi, I either got a message saying there were no codecs, or the audio files didnt exist. I have a dvd with no audio!

When i tried to burn my image with Nero it said The recorder could not specify the parameters!

When I used Tmpenc DVD author it failed....

You can see what happened, so i just dont get it. I am beginning to wonder if 5 wasted DVDs and 48 hours was worth the hassle.

steve

1st of all,you have a serious DMA problem....update your Nero to the latest version, and then go to your device manager-->IDE ATA/Atapi controllers, and @ the properties-->advanced tabs of both your primary and secondary ide channels, you have to select "DMA" from the dropdown box, instead of PIO,which your system is running now....

For a succesful avi to dvd conversion,it's also important that you have these codecs installed:
divx
xvid
ac3 filter

Thanks, what is DMA?

Both my drives are using Ultra DMA 2 - ultra 33

Is that what they should be?

Direct Memory Acces .........PIO and DMA Modes for IDE devices refer to how the devices communicate with the IDE controller. PIO is older and slower.....newer drives need DMA to work at their recommended speed.PIO causes hickups on most newer systems when transfering data, which means a slow burn,if you're lucky, but can create also numerous buffer underruns or failed burns...

according to your log,DMA is NOT enabled:

=== Scsi-Device-Map ===
DiskPeripheral : SiI RAID 0 Set 0 si3114r Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off
DiskPeripheral : WDC WD1200JB-00EVA0 nvatabus Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off

Thanks, so if my device manager says they are, but my log says not...what can i do?

steve

If they are enabled @ your device manager, they probably are,but can't communicate properly with your Nero.....did you update already to 6.6.0.8a?
It's also possible that your ide drivers don't work well together with your drives....Nvidia and Via based chipsets or Intel Application Accelerator to name a few,can create problems if their busmaster drivers are installed, instead of windows native busmaster drivers....

I also noticed that you have Aspi 4.71 installed ....4.60 is much more compatible, less conflicts with other Aspi versions, although Roxio says the opposite...

So should I upgrade the chipset drivers? I have a NForce 2 ultra borad.

I am trying to work out how to update nero...do I need to download another version?

And I have never heard of Aspi 4.71..what is it?

TBH I am really think, and quite new to this lark. Thanks for your time and patience, and i will ensure I give back to others in this forum when i get better at this.

You can either update to the latest version, which are the best right out of the pack, but still not 100% on every system, or you can rollback yours and choose windows native ones, which cause NO problems.....

Yep....and you can install it on top of your old 1......but disable your realtime virusscanner temporarily before you do...

Paranoid_ESE said:

ASPI stands for Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. Originally developed by Adaptec. It is a software layer that enables programs to communicate with SCSI (and ATAPI) devices.

Nero has it's own,so technically you don't need the Adaptec's version if you only use Nero as burning program, but fact is,that still lots of (burning/audio)programs depend on it to work properly......since it's installed on your system without your personal intervention,I assume that you have an Aspi-dependant program somewhere on your system that has installed it automaticly.....
