my cdrom and combo drive both used to start automatically when a disc was inserted. I can't think that I've altered any settings ( but may have done), any ideas what I should do to get the auto run back??

Disabled autorun is much better for a system. You had probably installed some software which disabled it-all advanced good software will do that..like rnm, eac.Still, post your system here and will tell you what to do??like is it win9x,2000,xp??

regedit, and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom
Setting this value to 1 means AIN enabled, and to zero disabled.
As said before disabling AIN has many advantages- unless you run software which explicitly needs that stupid thing turned on, e.g. a packet writer.
