Confession of a twisted mind

Hi all,

I have a terrible confession to make. Although some of you may be disguised by reading this, I feel I have to let it out of my system. Please feel free to leave anytime you feel a strange swirl in your gut or a taste of disguist in your mouth.

In the recent year or so, I've been doing terrible things to my XP installation.

- disabled all the Holy Services but 5 or 6
- uninstalled Messenger, Netmeeting, Remote Desktop Sharing, Speech Engines and whatnot else, unregistered and deleted their honorable DLLs without giving them a chance to do their thing which I know I'll need someday... Not!
- Applied every known "TweaK" I could find... I woke up with IOPageLockLimit and mumbled twice "ClearPageFileAtShutdown" before going to bed
- I have enslaved my beloved XP with more and more Critical Worker Threads and exhausted it with RealTimePriority
- Deprived it of Resolving NTFS shortcuts and freed it of His Documents, His Pictures, His Music, His Ebooks, His Favorites, His Templates, His Themes and His Cursors
- I have made it NEARLY impossible for XP to log my activity and report it to Whoever Needs 2 Know. Why? Beats me, but now I have a feeling I have done something terribly wrong. After all, I am not his Creator, ain't I?
- I even relied on services of creepy external torturers like XSetup and Tweaki, but THOSE WHO INSTALL SHELL EXTENSIONS like Norton The Fat Guy and TweakXP "I-Cannot-Stand-On-My-Feet-From-All-This-Jewelry" were quickly thrown out after the 453th reinstall
- Hired many cleaners like JV, but they have not shown themselves as very stable persons
- Done many other unthinkable tortures to this poor little thing. I started worrying, I mean, it has reduced to 887 M in size and getting thinner every day...

The weirdest thing is, whatever terrible torures I have applied to him, my XP seems to love me more and more. It crashes less and less on me and uses less and less memory. It obeys me more and more, and what's the strangest, even his buddies like OfficeXP and the bunch are more obedient and humble.

Now I don't know what else to do. Should I re-format C: and re-install XP without touching anything, and as a punishment for my sins, should I always full install all the applications and do an Online Registration whenever they wish, or should I continue to starve out and enslave this dying bastard... but where would I find new techniques of torture? I hear his cousin Linux is becoming fatter and fatter, but it's no fun torturing a poor guy.

The road ahead is dark...

LOL!!Great post GrofLuigi....;) I think you have done to Xp what needed to be done. You've created reliability, and removed the bloat!

You also have a flare for writing.Very nice!:)

Good idea

If it seems too good to be true it is. Like drunk as as skunk in a bar and having (HUH?) Miss Universe want you.

I would go with re fornat and stick to stock stuff. Hopefully you did not get a BAD deadly virus with your perfect XP.

Maybe if you could reduce it to working well at a command prompt!

That would give it some humility...

If you can get it any further down (lets say below 700Mb) you could almost rebadge it as your own and maybe release an ISO!!

Make sure you remove any logos etc!!!

....come to think of it.... there are no logos at the command prompt

PS - Just thought of another one....

Maybe start reducing the amount of RAM in your PC and see how far you can go before performance degrades.....badly

I've managed to get Windows98 working in 12Mb RAM....took some doing, but I did it!.....gotta love the torture

Hehe...we should start a contest to see if anyone can get it to run on 64 megs of ram.;)

Switch to LINUX..........................you know it makes sense !! Why spend time removing all the junk from XP when linux (SuSe 8.2) does it better !!

Now what's wrong with command prompt? I love command prompt! :)

Sadly enough, my Program Files is around 7 Gb so that could become a problem. I have to pay more attention to it... :)

Of course, my system partition is easily ghosted on one CD, which I do often, but what's the use when I constantly pull stuff out of it and I don't want to restore junk :)

About memory... I get about 60 M used after a clean boot, so I guess it would work on a 64 M computer (and I think that's minimal requirement for XP), but you need to have some mem for the applications...

Greetz 2 all

Firstly,

Zen - I LOVE you "signature" your damn right, the universe is winning.....but eventually the 'System' will surpass it!!!

To those that want to use Linux - Tha's admitting defeat!

Just coz we want to fight with blunt Knives, doesn't mean to say you can bring out a machine-gun!

Fight the bastard I say!!!!!

Anyone here heard of Win98Lite??? Now that was a great tool - and believe it or not I've had reason to use it for 'real' requirements....

I like the idea of Woody's to see how far we can push it......

@ Siriosys: I use 98lite at work on a machine that was marked for trash, but now feels* faster than the main one (PentiumI @ 166 MHz vs Celeron @ 900 MHz) and everyone's fighting to use it. :)

The newer one was a beast when bought, but both of them suffer from the same syndrome - company's policy to cut costs on one item only when buying computers - RAM. Dammit, I'm afraid to ask for a new one now - I really can't see them suffer THAT much.

* Sadly, only "feels" faster since you can't really put any processing power into it...
