Computer illiterate but trying to change all that. when I try to boot my windows 2000 I keep getting an error saying <windows2000root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt. How do I re-install this as it suggests I do?? I ran check disk which I just taught myself to do :) and windows replaced a couple of bad clusters. I have also checked and double checked that my system is virus free (with a couple different scans in case one missed something) Please someone tell me what I need to do next. Help before I drop kick this comp. out the window.
Thx,
-Cindy-

ntoskrnl.exe is the Windows kernel, the core of the operating system. If you don't have that file, don't except your computer to do anything...:p
Good idea for the checkdisk m8! It just told you you have bad clusters on your harddrive... When you say before I drop kick this comp. out the window, well, you should do this with the harddrive! When some bad clusters appear on the hd, even if you fix those, they will still multiplicate... Your HD is dead. If the ntoskrnl.exe was in a bad cluster, than that could have explain why the system couldnt find it.

I would suggest that you try to recover your important data with a recovery tool, than buy a new HD, and then reinstall windows on it... Depending on your luck/skill, you could get alot of data as you could not... Keep in mind that you could be in a situation where all your data is lost... sorry...:(

I don't know much of free recovery tool... Maybe someone here will know some? They are many wich arent free, I've heard of many but never tryed them myself... Hope someone will post a appropriate!

Good luck indeed...

PC Inspector File Recovery is free,but can only run from windows,which means you 1st have to connect an extra harddisk to install your os and File Recovery before you can acces the damaged drive.

reading around this can be corrected by re writing the boot.ini file using the dos fdisk command to repair the master boot record

fdisk /mbr and it should re-write the boot.ini file for you :)

this could be caused by service pack 3 for w2k

Well with multiple attempts I am able to get windows to load and even get on-line. Does this mean there is any hope for restoring? Could I fdisk and possibly reload a new operating system?or am I just being naive? Also I have noticed that my tower is making extra noise. :(

recheck that your fans are running fine;
if the noise comes from your harddisk then backup your data to a new one;

It really looks like the HD is dead...

Try Bart's Disktool from http://www.nu2.nu/utils/
I think it will scan your HD, its free. Put it on a boot floppy, reboot the computer with the boot floppy inside, and run the program.

You could try this one if the problem is with the partition (I think its not, but you can check too)
TestDisk from http://www.cgsecurity.org/index.html?testdisk.html

Do the same to execute it: on a boot floppy.

They are others whitch arent free, but if you have data that is worth it...
SpinRite (90$) http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm
GetDataBack (80$) http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm
EasyRecovery (90$) http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecoverydatarecovery/

So I suggest doing as dureacell said, boot into the recovery console, run "fixmbr" and "fixboot". If it doesnt work, try to get your data back and buy a new hd...
