computer freezes

My brother has an old computer (not as old as mine) that has a nasty problem. It tends to freeze completely almost immediately after starting it. It starts all programs normally, you can see the desktop and within the first minute or so something goes wrong. It doesn't always happen, but very often it does and it's very annoying. If it doesn't lock up, it works perfectly. No programs cause problems, or anything like that.

Where do you start looking for the cause of this problem? I thought it might have something to do with antivirus or firewall incompatibility, but using different programs\combinations didn't help at all. The same goes for switching from Windows 2000 to XP.

Could it be a hardware problem (by the way, the hard disk is new, should be ok)? Updating drivers won't work, because all components are not supported anymore ( latest drivers are at least 3 years old).

What to do now?

have a look at Windows' Event Log; you may find related entries there;
another method is deactivating all not really needed hardware and trying some reboots after reactivating parts step by step;

Agree with the above .. check which programs are starting at boot up .. and close any that are not really needed .. How much RAM have you got in the comp ??

I think it's 256MB.

Well, it's not a defective memory stick. I replaced it with one from my computer and that didn't help. Also, there are no startup programs that shouldn't be there. I checked that and there is nothing "strange" happening there.
