Computer DVD Player Software

I do not own as yet, a standalone DVD player (waiting for the industry to make up its mind) and play all of my DVD's with Power DVD which was bundled with my LDW-411S. I'm not totally unhappy with PDVD but I installed a very old copy of WinDVD and the playback seemed perceptibly smoother. However, after a while this old software could'nt hack it and I had to revert to PDVD.
My question is: What player is best ie. smoothest/most configurable? Preferably free :D

For a Standalone hardware PLAYER, just check out any prospective models in the DVDRhelp hardware reports - you should be able to find one that can read both + and - if you require.

Now standalone DVD RECORDERS, are still crippled by +/- indecision, the threat of other formats overtaking (eg. Blu-ray), the high prices, and that for many tasks (unless you are goung to take the recorded DVD elsewhere or kepp it indefinitely) they are outgunned by HD recorders.

Zoom Player Standard is a fine freeware.Just use yahoo to locate it's homepage. Sorry that I cant give you this detail at the moment.
