computer crashes while ripping

My computer often crashes while trying to convert a DVD to a diffrent format (like svcd, divx xvid etc.)

I've tried defragmentation and to close every program and internetconection while ripping but it still crashes.
does someone have an idea of what causes this problem?

Heat issues? Bad RAM? Encoding tends to stress more so than most things.

I don't now, I now for shure that it's no wrong with the cooling.
But can it be my processor? (I have an AMD athlon xp 2220+)
