greetings all.
Im a newbie here. but hope not to be over time :)

Anyways my question is.
I just brought a new notebook. its a Dell Inspiron 1100.
now the cd/dvd device that it came with is the: NEC DVD+RW ND-5100A
Now the software that came on the computer is Sonic My dvd.
And ive tried to use the built in software the Sonic Record now to make copies of my dvd's.
How ever when i insert my blank cd into the dvd player (NEC DVD+RW ND-5100A) i dont think the computer recongises it.
The blank discs i brought are 1-4X DVD-R discs?
now ive seen there are 2 main types +R and -R
does that make a difference for me?

So if someone can help me out on how to get my burner copying that would be great.
Or reccomend some good software to make good backups of my dvd's and make my own.

(note: normal data and music cdr's burn fine. just the dvd ones im having trouble with.
Thanks
Josh

Welcome! :D
Your problem is the disks. Your burner only recognizes +r and won't/can't use -r at all.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

Thanks for your replys.
Ive gone out and gotton some +R discs, and they appear to be working fine.

Now another question.
It says on the discs that you can only have 120mins of video.
So if im copying a dvd or putting my own movies onto cd. does that mean i can only copy 120mins of video?
and next question is. if i do an exact copy of the disc so it copys all the features of an existing dvd to my disc, will that work also?

Thanks

It's all dependant on bitrate. If you encode a video at a low enough bitrate, you can fit WAY more than 2 hours on a dvdr. Beware, the lower the bitrate, the worse the quality.
You can make an exact copy of any dvd. Get DVDShrink and in full copy mode, you can make it fit perfectly on one dvdr. Again, the quality may suffer, because a dvd 9 (commercial dvd) has roughly twice the information on it as a dvd 5 (the dvdr you're burning).
Most people do away with the extras, and foreign language subs and stuff, then reauthor just the movie portion of the dvd onto dvdr. Shrink also is the best tool for the job.

the recording times listed on dvds are really only applicable to standalone recorders, which only have fixed bitrates based on the recording mode you choose (SP/EP/LP). if you want to do full disc backups, i suggest you look into dvdrebuilder for the highest quality.
