Clicking noise on burner

ok, i got a problem. I got a new comp w/ a cd-rw, assuming that's a burner (i'm new with this burner thing). When i tested it out burning music the first time it worked perfectly. Then i didn't use the burner for around 1-2 months. And today i tried to burn one again it didn't work. First it said it was converting, converting to cda files i suppose, then when i starts to copy, it stops and does nothing. At the same time the burner, you can hear it start up and then stop (spinning the cd?), start up and stop; and it just keeps repeating. Also, when the burner starts up then stops, it adds a little clicking/creaking noise (sounds like it's stuck or stepping on old wooden floor).
I tried defragin c drive before burning, tried restarting comp, tried diff programs all with the same results.

I really need help thx.

I guess you need a little more information bout my comp....
Windows XP
AMD Athlon 2400X
CD-RW 48x max
dvd rom 16x max
256 mb ram
80 gb hard drive
32 mb S3 graphics prosavageDDR
adsl internet (?)

My initial reaction... sounds like an expensive noise.

Does it READ a CD ok?

Is it poor or possibly defective media ... you didn't return a problematic disk to the top of a spindle pack did you? - I know I've been that slack once - NEVER AGAIN - the noise the drive made when I gave it that disk again sounded like it was dead for sure!
