Guys, I don't know what the technical terminoligy is, so I used "clean boot of XP Pro".

What I want to know is if there is a way to set your system up so that when you start it, it loads the bare minimum so that maximum system resources can be used to play high end 3D games, for example.

what you trying to do is disabling unneeded startup entries/services;
XP comes with allong with 2 native configuration utilities:
just try our forum's search function and type in "msconfig" (without quotes);
the other useful command is "services.msc";
