any ideas (and fixes) for cdroms stopping autorun?starting?
One post on this matter will do. Your other post on this same matter has been removed.
Please take note of our rules...
Added note..
check your device management to see if you have auto insert notification checked. Also check your software as some may disable this option...stuff like burning apps,

ah found the quick reply! os xp home sp1a. don't know about the packet writer thang, I don't recall getting one!! anyway I have changed the registry but it reverts back to what it was on reboot. can I change the autorun always disable in the regedit, I've tried to delete it but it returns on reboot.

For disabling Auto Insert Notification the entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
should be changed to 0 (zero), not 1.
As for the different values on the nodrivetypeautorun value (not allowing autorun for certain types of disks, even if AutoInsert Notification is enabled) look here:
http://www.jsiinc.com/sube/tip2300/rh2316.htm This is mandatory for Win2000, on XP you can alter those settings via thr rightclick context menu as well.

The autorunalwaysdisable is not relevant... it's made by Windows for certain CD-ROM devices which don't support autorun at all, and should not be altered.

For altering the above values you MUST be logged in with full administrative privileges, else it won't work.
