changing file systems??..

hey i wanna know how do i change my file system to ntfs or fat32..i have 2 hard drives on my computer now....one is fat32 with the OS on it and the other is just extra space but is ntfs....i wanna know how to change the ntfs to fat32 and fat32 to ntfs how would i do that??..also which one would u guys recommend??..

As far as i know U cant go from ntfs to fat32 without using a 98 boot disk to format, but U can convert a drive from fat32 to ntfs using the convert utility that comes with XP :)

Wait 4 more advice, i not a big XP fan so dont use it

I have never tried either (I don't have Windows NT/2K/XP), but I have Partition Magic. If its possible, this software can do it without having to reformat and reload the drive. I have converted FAT16 to FAT32, joined partitions, resized and created new ones without reformating. There is support for NTFS with this software.

I have to say for someone who's not a fan you give out the right info. In XP Disk Managemennt you can convert your fat32 drive to NTFS with out losing any data. I recommend NTFS so you don't have any problem with file size limits. I don't remember the size but you will run into a problem ripping DVDs without NTFS.

Windows XP Pro supports FAT, FAT32, and NTFS file systems. You can convert both FAT and FAT32 to NTFS without the loss of data. However, if you want to go from NTFS to FAT'S, you will have to delete all the partitions in order to do so.
You can use the Convert command to do from FAT to NTFS.
at the command prompt type:
Convert [drive:] /fs:ntfs Where [drive:] is your drive letter.

About maximum volume size, it is at follow:
- FAT16 2GB MAX
- FAT32 32GB MAX
- NTFS 2TB MAX

just my 2cents

umm....can u guys tell me the steps to convert ntfs to fat32??..i have the 98 boot up disk....as for partition magic i heard about that program....dont know where i can get it....and i dont know much about it....

Partition Magic info can be found here:

Here is some great pricing

Look at the manual and check out page 74. There are limitations. Max file size, max partition size and other stuff.

From what I have read, NTFS is better. Larger file and partition sizes. It also allows for smaller cluster sizes (small files waste less space). I will be moving to XP this year :).
