CenDyne Lightning III - Unknown Manufacturer?

Thought I might get luckie buying CenDyne Lightning III CDRW. Bought it from Staples, Got it home installed attempted to find firmware update - to see if luckie and got LITEON. Well you guessed it.... CenDyne hsa no firmware update.. Win2K sees it as "ATAPI CD-RW 40/12/48X". Manufacturer "standard CD-ROM Drives".

NTI CD-Maker 2000 Professional v.5.0.17 doesn't see it. Neither does Nero. Have ASPI 4.60.

I know, thow it out, get LiteOn.
Any osuggestions?
Thanks,
Alex

Did you look at the actual physical drive. Usually Cendyne leaves the original maker's information on it. Also, there should be an FCC number which you can check against an FCC database.

Yep,good advice!

Another thing, let us know what version firmware it uses.It might use Liteon firmware,or be flashed to it.

If you want a CenDyne Lite-On CD-RW suggest you re-visit Staples and return this particular CD-RW drive. Have the sales representative check the remaining stock and look on the CenDyne box for a LTR part number. All the CenDyne Lite-On drives have a LTR part number. Staples has a very liberal return policy (look at you sales receipt) and you should not encounter any problems returning your present CD-RW drive for a CenDyne Lite-On drive.

Coaster

PS – If you would like to obtain some information about CenDyne Lite-On CD-RW drives suggest you visit http://club.cdfreaks.com/ and review the postings under the “LiteOn Forum”. There is information there concerning how to identify the CenDyne Lite-On CD-RW drives.

azjohnson, I have a CenDyne Lightning III and it IS a LiteOn 40125S (401248).

From the moment it came out of the box, I knew it was a LiteOn.
1) It still had the LiteOn sticker on top of the drive.
2) It showed up in my BIOS and Windows as a LiteOn 40125S.

Sad to say, you probably don't have a LiteOn if it does not show up in the BIOS and Windows. CenDyne is notorious for changing manufacturers, especially after getting rave reviews for using LiteOn OEM drives. They usuallly switch to a cheaper drive manufacturer. Dirty pool

Coaster's advice is spot-on. The CenDyne LiteOn's do have the LTR part number on the back of the box. Hopefully you can find one as the LiteOn 40125S is an excellent drive. Good luck! :)
