is there a way to capture a movie from satellite via a firewire and how? thnx.

Most Decoder/Set top boxes have Video out as Composite video. If you have an Analogue Capture Card, then just feed this to your capture card together with Audio and capture away.
Unless your Decoder box has a specific Firewire out (I'm not aware of one but still learning all this satelite stuff), then the simple answer would be no.
The Nokie decoder boxes have a high speed SCSI output I believe that allows direct capturing. There are also some Decoders in the form of PCI Cards and directly capture to your HD.

thnx chickenman. i have an analog capture card at the moment and i've been capturing movies from external sources like dss, dvd player, vhs and analog cam. the reason i asked is because i was thinking of getting a mini dv cam which of course i have to change my cap card to a firewire one. now, once i do that, i can't capture anymore from external sources. from what i heard from other sources, some mini dv cams have input wherein you can record movies from dss, etc. into your dv cam. is it true? if this is the case, then i can use the dv cam as a bridge meaning i have to connect my dss to my cam and my cam to the firewire card without necessarily recording to my cam, just a bridge. what do you think?
I have also read what you are proposing but I am not in a position to confirm it all.
You also do NOT have to remove your current Capture card when you install a Firewire card. I have both in my system. That way just carry on as before with the added benifit of being able to capture DV via Firewre as well.

Yep you can keep your analog capture card.
About dv cam, well I have one but doesn't support video in, anyway which kind of connection does the dss have and how would you plug it to che cam ? The only cam which I know that supports video ins is Hitachi DVD cam asian version (surely there are others), it has RCA video in/out and S-video in/out, but no digital ins, so it would be the same as you connect to analog capture card..

I don't know if there's a cam which have digital in..Thank you for all your replies. The dss system has a composite connection and an S-video out. I didn't know I can keep my old card. Once I have a digi cam and a firewire card, I'll ask you guys how to use each card but for now, I'll go look for a digi cam. thnx again.
