Can't view avi

Hi
Please bear with me on this as I am not familiar with video formats.
I have an avi movie on file and tried to open it in Windows XP media player. It reported codec errors (??) but played the soundtrack.
I searched the forum for an answer and decided to download divfix. I then stripped and rebuilt the index (at this stage I hadn't a clue what I was doing and still don't!).
Now when I try to play in media player it says "class not registered" and wont even play the soundtrack.
Should the avi have played in the first place or should I have burned it CD?
Thanks

Thanks again - your advice paid off.
I d/ld the divx5 codec and a once unplayable file now plays - great!
Please may I ask more of you:
1) My file which I stripped and rebuilt (and didn't copy first) is rendered unplayable. Can it be repaired?
2) If I had copied this file to a CD before messing with it, would it have played on a normal DVD player?
Thx in advance
