Can't View .avi files

Hello:

I have a laptop with S-video out. I connect it to my TV to watch DVDs. Regular DVDs work fine using PowerDVD for WinXP. I have downloaded an .avi xvid movie that I want to watch but I can't view it with PowerDVD. So I tried WinDVD. The problem is I can see the video fine on my laptop but the image within the WinDVD box on my TV is black.

Anyone know how I can get it to show up on my TV as well as my laptop?

Win Media Player 9 acts just like WinDVD.

maby you need the xvid codecs installed for this to work !?
search this forum for xvid and find many related articles on this codec and download locations :) you may need to install ac3 codecs too as this is often used with avi divx files :)

Hi Viper:

At first the movie would not work even on my laptop and I installed the xvid codecs and the Nimo Lite Pack. I think that AC3 Codec is in the Nimo lite pack but am not sure about that. I will look for that too then.

The only thing is, I did get the video to work fine on the laptop after installing the above mentioned codecs but the image on my TV went black even though the one on the laptop worked fine.

Thanks,

Ed

Sounds like an overlay issue. What video card are you using? Also what are you using to decode the XviD? Nic's decoder or the standard decoder, also which build?

PS. I wouldn't recommend installing Nimo or any other codec pack.

can u force the overlay in your graphics /onboard/card configuration options !? some graphics cards have this option as a switchable tab :)

ac3 codec download > http://www.glasso.dk/ac3.htm

xvid search the forum loads of posts on this here :)

a suggestion of using the stable build of xvid and not the beta versions is also a good idea as betas are always prone to bugs :)

Thanks guys! You've given me a lot to work with. I am going to experient tonight.

The graphics card in my laptop is an ATI Mobility P.

Still no luck with the laptop to TV via s-video yet, but I tried something else and am having problems with that now. Maybe someone can help me with this as well?

I am trying to watch movies on my TV using my computer for a DVD player so
to speak. I am getting two problems. One the image that I get on my TV using
S-video out is in Black and White--everything is black and white, not just
the movies. The other problem is the TV screen resolution is too big. I have
to bump the sides of the screen with the mouse cursor to get to see the
whole screen, but the computer monitor is fine using 1280 x 1024.

How can I get color and how can I get the screen resolution to look like my
computer monitor on my TV?

I am using a Radeon 8500 with 128 megs of ram in this system and the latest Omega drivers from March 17th.

When Movies come out Black & White, normally its an NTSC/PAL issue. Check your laptop to which format its outputting and change it to the other option.

Actually, everything is in black and white--meaning the windows desktop themes-dialog boxes everything and that is before even starting a movie up.

This is using my desktop system. I am going to tinker with both my laptop and desktop until I get one of them to do what I want.

a not here is that you have to usually change your display output settings to something your tv set can handle here in the uk i have to change to 800x600 to output PAL 50hz to my tv :)

NTSC is 60hz so maby try change your output resolution to 800x600 or even 640x480 see if this helps ?!
