Can't find this problem with LiteOn 411S

(taken from "just joined" thread)

I'm new obviously and full of newbie wonderment (is that a word?). I have a BUSlink DVRW412RD, which I believe is really a LiteOn 411S (and win2k thinks so too). I've flashed FS0F and now FS0J so far. I can't seem to get ECD 4.0 (yes, it's archaic but I'm working on an upgrade) or Acoustica, Direct CD... etc. to recognize it as a burner. I know it's a DVD burner too but I wanted to test it's CD abilities first. My HP CD Writer 9100+ has a tab with read/write speeds, etc. as well as the DCD tab (when you right click, properties)... my 411s does not. I've done Kprobe and it pulls up that it's able to write CD R/RW, DVD+/- R/RW's and the whole 9 yards. I've uninstalled and reinstalled ECD, DCD, and Acoustica about 20 times to no avail. I'm sure someone here knows exactly what I need to do here.

To recap... I have:
AMD 805MHZ
384MB PC133 RAM
Windows 2000 SP3
BUSlink DVRW412RD (LiteOn 411S as windows says it is?)
Have not tried to burn any DVD's as I both have no DVD burning SW, and since I can't get it to be recognized as a CD burner... I figured what's the point.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I've been searching forums all night and have found nothing really conclusive or specific to my problem.

Yes,get rid of EZ CD quick! ;)

Try Nero,or RecordNowMax to see the full potential of your new drive.Check out our dvd tutorials too.

ECDC 4 is WAY too old to support it - even at 4.05

http://rpp.roxio.com/drives/?page=supported_drives&search=411s&OPT=fn
According to that, basic 5.3.5.10.k is the lowest version to support it.

And while the retail is stated to be 6.0x - a retail V5 with update to 5.3.5p might also handle it.

If you LIKE Easy CD Cremator, no real harm in going with it, but it's a hellishly bad neighbour to most other CD-R/DVD-R software - I think I've already mentioned "5dollarsoftware" before - if you want to try it, 5$ for a Cremator V5, and get the update from Roxio - V4 will NEVER do that drive, V5 plus update might.

PS. How do you have an AMD 805 MHz - or did you mean 850 ?
Either way, encoding to MPEG2 for DVD will be painfully slow ... it's slow enough even with a monster CPU.

My 2 centsworth

U will need as stated IMHO to

(i) BIN Cremator
(ii) Get a faster processor
(iii) More & quicker RAM would also help

Hmmm... this is not really what I wanted to hear but then again what ever is? Well I'm not too sure I can upgrade my CPU, not quite sure if this board supports a faster CPU or not. A whole new board with CPU and some DDR RAM would be nice but I was hoping that I could get away with what I have. I won't be trying to burn 5 DVD's a day or anything. If I can at least successfully burn DVD's with this PC I don't mind doing it in long steps where I step away from it for hours at a time.

So, provided that I have good SW for burning (Nero, XCopy Platinum, Pinnacle... not sure but I'll research)... do you think I can get away with what I have system wise? If not it might be time to get a new PC, which would make 5 in the house now. I have a AMD K6II 485MHZ with 160MB PC133 and a fresh W2K install sitting here not being used either...

WHAT YOU NEED FOR DVD BACKUPS

It is advisable to have at least 15GB, or more of free space. The processes for DVD backup need lots of room.
The NTFS file system is advised. WIN XP and Windows 2K are the preferred OS.

An IBM compatible personal computer with a Pentium-Class
Microprocessor at minimum 500 MHz. Windows 98 / 98SE / ME with 128 MB RAM, Windows NT4.0 with Service Pack 4 or better installed, Windows 2000 or Windows XP with 128 MB RAM.
- A DVD writer (burner) and/or DVD reader.
- The faster the CPU (1 GHz recommended) and the more memory (256 MB Recommended) you have, the better it is going to perform.

Taken from a tutorial. ;)

sorry woody. I have looked in "Member Tutorials" and found mostly stuff on AVI/MPEG2. I'm catching on here. I just downloaded DVDShrink 3.1.4 and am going to try and backup Scarface Anniversary Edition. I have free space so hopefully my 384PC133 and slower CPU will suffice for now.

TRANSCODING, as Dvdshrink does, is not as painfully slow as encoding from scratch or fully re-encoding, but the times are going to be at the outside edge of any given estimates, if not beyond.

PS. What Motherboard, if it can take recent processors, I've just been redain about people overclocking the hell out of Duron 1600's - a peach of a processor, if your motherboard will allow you to abuse it far enough - or a good CPU to throw into the cheapest 333FSB motherbord you can get (it's actually a 266FSB processor, but so far nobody has failed to get it to run at 2000 real MHZ, not artificial "plus" rating at 333FSB)

I'm not sure which board I have. My system info says this is a MSI (manufacturer) MS-6195 w/ x86 Family 6 Model 2 Stepping 2 Authentic AMD ~805MHZ. I could pull the case but it's a saturday night ;)

Nevermind, edited. I used DVD Decrypter first and now DVD Shrink will allow me to compress as I wish. Now I just have to figure out how to compress different chapters more/less than others. I don't want the whole movie at 65% quality.

Here is my Kprobe info on the disc (Scarface) I burned last night:

Disc Type = DVD+R
Manufacturer = Ricoh Company Limited

<< Disc Information >>
Erasable = False
Status of Last Session/Border = Complete Session/Border
Disc Status = Complete Disc
Number of First Track/RZone on Disc = 1
Number of Sessions/Borders(LSB) = 1
First Track/RZone Number in Last Session/Border(LSB) = 1
Last Track/RZone Number in Last Session/Border(LSB) = 1
Disc Identification Valid(DID_V) = False
Disc Bar Code Valid(DBC_V) = False
Unrestricted Use Disc(DRU) = True
Disc Type = CD-DA or CD-ROM Disc
Disc Identification = 00000000h
Lead-in Start Time of Last Session = 255:255:255(FF:FF:FFh)
Last Possible Start Time for Startof Lead-out = 255:255:255(FF:FF:FFh)
Disc Bar Code = 0000000000000000h
Number of OPC Table Entries = 0

<< Track Information >>
Number of Complete Sessions on Disc = 1

I used DVD Decrypter first in File Mode, selected all files. Then I used DVD Shrink and reauthored it, cutting out all of the warning, rated R, all of the little BS chapters and menus. Then I backed it up with DVD Shrink and then used InstantCopy 8.0.3 to burn it. Now I'm wondering if I did something to screw it up because my settop, albeit old (PhillipsMagnavox from probably 4 years ago), won't do anything but go "Read"..."Open"..."Read"..."Open". I also saw something on DVD+R's not being 100%compatible without doing something to them first. If anyone can see here either from my Kprobe info or what I've writtern here... just what I did wrong... please let me know.

Edit: HERE it says that my PhillipsMagnavox DVD 825 is compatible with DVD+RW and +R. So now I'm wondering if I took something out that I shouldn't have.

Edit2: HERE it says only DVD-R's will work. I guess I shall try the disc in my dad's DVD player at his place and if it works there... off to buy some DVD-R's.

Slot A - no sensible upgrade path without a new motherboard.
The 805 must be an 800 with the speed running a fraction of a percent high.

Still, if your transcode speed is adequate, you might be able to hold out until 64 bit comes down in price - and AMD seem to have some budget 64 bit CPU's in the schedule.

Waiting is usually a good thing in computers - the price of a basic, midrange and top end tend not to change, but in a year or 2, the basic is worth nothing, the mid-range is now the basic, the top end is now the mid-range, and the new top end is something you never thought possible or necessary.

I'm trying to price a barebones system now that will be dedicated to authoring CD's/DVD's. Want something cheap and with just what I need, MB, HDD, CPU, RAM, Vid card. Eventually I may move everything over to it but I like my little system I have for everyday use.

Also ordered a 50PK of Ritek G04 -R's. $53 free shipping... not bad. Meritline.

FWIW, I don't know what I'm doing right but I have an old p3 866 on an msi ms 6337 mobo/512 mb ram/2x80 gig hdd's and have absolutely no trouble with speed or ripping DVD's with my Liteon LDW-411S FSOF. I flashed the mobo bios once before but did'nt like the new ones as they were basically unconfigurable so I reflashed to the earlier ones. I run XP Pro/SP1/Rollup and the system is absolutely rock solid. Is the recommendation to upgrade based on the inadequacy of the early AMD chips? Because I have absolutely no complaints with my old Dinosaur. BTW, just to stay abreast of technology, I'll be upgrading to a P4 later in the year but I will be using this old system as a 'Home Theatre' system.
