"Cannot Format DVD", Nero 5.5, DVD+R/RW, NEC ND-1100A

Hi,

I've been trying to burn DVD videos, but the damn program (Nero 5.5, see subject line) keeps telling me "Cannot format DVD" (or something to that effect).

I'm using NEC ND-1100A, and it's hooked up correctly -- I checked and made sure. I'm also using the proper DVD format, DVD+RW, which I KNOW this drive can handle.

There are no drivers to download for this drive on any of NEC's sites. In fact, they said that they don't provide optical device drivers to consumers. However, the Windows (XPprof) Device Manager said that the "Device is fuctioning properly".

Any idea? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Update...

Here's some updated info:

I've learned that my problem is larger than I thought. Everytime I try to erase and format my DVD+RW disc, the software says "Invalid Command". This occurs in both Nero 5.5 and Alcohol 120% 1.4.6.

??

Based on some research into past threads, I've determined that I should upgrade firmware. So, I upgraded to 1.A1 7 (1.32), which seemed to be the latest version. Then I realized advice in the thread said I should install 1.76, which was on a different page. But when I downloaded the installer, it was all in Japanese and wouldn't let me choose a drive. It just said "target drive not found", but it didn't even give me an option to CHOOSE a target drive!

Hi Kalor, Welcome to our forum!

i don't think it's a firmware problem; please read here: http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=35292 and http://www.dvdrbase.com/showthread.php?t=32137

Well,I don't know if this is the case for you,but I had a similar problem with my Sony DRU500 A.......I couldn't erase dvd+rw discs anymore, and I couldn't burn to new ones either. However, the ones I recorded in the past, were properly recognised by the drive.....and dvd-rw's were still working.
After a lot of experimenting with firmware, cables and settings,I finally found my problem:a dirty lens...
It's hard to believe, since my drive still burned cd-r,cdr-w,dvd-r and dvd-rw........but NO dvd+rw!...
I cleaned the lens, and can format and burn dvd+rw again..... :D

I'll give a try!!! I know my A04 with 2x4all firmware was very picky with DVD-RW's if fact some RW media I could only write to it once and that was brand new frist time use.:( But I could buy and use compusa brand (1x-RW) with out a problem and as many times as I wanted. Infact I did a post about how bad optodisc (OW470-00) -RW media was but that disc that didn't work in A04 works in my Optorite (DD0401). Too bad it's 1x cause I'll never use it not since I have 4x +RWs. I don't know if you can have the same problem with + media but have you tried other brand media?

I'll try it with another brand... I'll up the results when it has been tried (shouldn't be long).

Another brand didn't make a difference. But boy... have I just gone through some adventures or WHAT...

I went out and bought a new DVD burner. It wasn't recognized as even being a DVD drive! And the one program that DID recognize it as being a DVD drive ran into the same error as my LAST drive!

A few friends and I discovered that the PC was interpreting the drives as SCSI, when they were in fact IDE. This was due to the fact that I had them running through a media controller card. So, we removed the media controller card and tried the newer DVD burner connected straight to the mainboard.

Well, it didn't work. Same problems, although it no longer read as SCSI (neither drive did, actually). Then we tried disconnecting my CD-R/RW drive, and...

Presto! It worked! Well... the "old" DVD burner, at least (the NEC). It functioned perfectly. However, I'd really like to get the newer Lite-On one working, seeing as it's twice as fast and handles both + and -. I have yet to test out the Lite-On without the CD-R/RW drive connected.

I don't even know if I'm remembering this all right... but... damn...
