Need we say more ?

But it says something about them only being able to be used in 4x drives.... My Philips DVDRW824 supports, 8 x 4 x 12.... Am I able to use this DVD media in my drive? What does it mean by saying can only be used on 4x in capable drives?????

Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Thank You!!!

One thing I have discovered about burners and ritek is that nothing is certain until you test it. The riteks you mention ( have 50 pack spindle of them) work well in my trusty old sony dru500, but in the picky liteon 832s they all end up as coasters.

So my experience with media is that except with the highest quality brands such as taiyo yuden, you have to test each lesser quality brand with your writer to see which burns error free and which don't. Better to buy only a few to check it out first or consult someone who has your exact burner and ask what brands they use. :)

Not to get side tracked here, but I am also using the LiteOn 832S and hve no problems whatsoever using the riteks. elsamay, you may need to flash your drive to a more recent firmware. Im using VSOB

Thanks peeps... I may well go ahead and order those then.
Where can you get those taiyo yuden's that you were going on about Elsamay??

Whats all this about FIRMWARE though??

Hm ok thanks I was wondering if anyone had that problem. The ritek go4's i have are the white topped printable ones, I have a feeling that they are not the better quality ritek g04. I will flash the drive to VSOB, Im still with VSOA.

Well I got mine (taiyo Yuden +R 1-8x, made in Japan ) at a computer fair in Newcastle NSW (Australia). I bought 2 packs of 10 for $18 each pack, so I thought 1.80 for each high quality disk was ok. I know people buy them from online stores but I don't know which ones as I dont buy media that way.

Firmware - sort of a little bios in the optical drive that interacts with the hardware and media you use - can you tell I am no expert ? lol. One tyhing I do know though - how to flash the drive to change that firmware :)

Several Ritek Dye medias there, including Ridata (another Ritek house brand), and Ridisc (NOT a Ritek house brand - some say ok, others say avoid)

Ritek's reputation is going down, due to far too much B-grade "Ritek" media - some drives do ok on it, others don't - Datawrite Yellow can be good - but thre's a reason it's cheaper than Ritek/Ridata/RicohJPN, and unlike some oddbod media, at least DW Yellow V2 should always be Ritek G04 - as will the DataSafe.

The best of the Ritek now seems to be the RICOH - made by Ritek to their specifications.

-R media is unsuitable for a +R/+RW Drive - and this one has two models, + only or dual

According to this writeup, the Philips DVDRW824 - is a PLUS ONLY drive:
Speed up to 8x on +R
Up to 4x on +RW (not +/- as misprinted)

Confirmed from official site.

This drive require DVD+R or DVD+RW media only - if you have ordered -R, try to cancel or change it, or arrange to return the media unopened if it's too late.

So it would be THIS page at the sponsor's site

If you want to write at 8x (depends if it's on the supported list), the Datawrite Classic DVD+R 8x speed (It'll be Prodisc R03 Dye) , may be a good one.

The Bulkpaq 4x +R could be one of 3 ... "Media ID 001" (generic code, crap!), "VDSPMSAB 001" (crap!), "IS01 001" (Infosmart ??? - also found in the "Budget" brand and several others) - Got some recently at a computer fair, and it was IS01 001 - and found that my Liteon drive could be tweaked to recognize the code and burn it at 6x.

The purple Ritek DVD+R (4x) is pretty good - I recall it being a Ritek or Ricoh code, and apparently capable of speedhack to 8x or even 12x in a Liteon.

*** BUT *** Perhaps I jumped the gun....

The /00 version of the 824 does not support -R
The /20 version DOES support -R
Not found the pay upgrade yet, or any alternative source, and your drive MAY already be the -R capable model - see what something like Nero Infotool says about it (get from www.cdspeed2000.com - if you don't have a copy of Nero which includes it)

The final story... and it looks like I muffed the link as well.

The DVDRW824K/00 (firmware P1.2), is +R/+RW only - 8x/4x
The DVDRW824K/20 (firmware P2.1), adds limited -R/-RW media support, burning 2x media at 2.4x - this is a purchased upgrade to the /00, or native on some drives as sold.
The DVDRW824K/40 (firmware P3.3 latest), is a full +/- drive:
+R = 8x
+RW = 4x
-R = 4x
-RW = 2.4x (standard would be 2x)

This means that the drive will run supported 8x +R media at up to 8x, 4x media at 4x, and unsupported/unknown +R media at 4x or the basic speed of 2.4x.

On DVD-R it can use 4x media at 4x (the /20 model has a very limited media list, of 2x and 4x media that it will use at 2.4x).

Nero Infotool should tell you the firmware of the drive - if it's a P3 version, you should be ok, but unless you have a player compatibility reason for using -R, I wouldn't recommend it with the limited capabilities of the P2 version.

Even in the /40 model with P3 firmware, this is clearly a drive that majors in +R, as it's an 8 by 4 drive and not an 8 by 8
